Fastest method: press Windows + PrtScn to capture every visible display and save the image automatically in PicturesScreenshots. If you press PrtScn alone, Windows copies the whole screen to the clipboard instead; paste it with Ctrl + V. For editing, annotation, or a timed capture, press Windows + Shift + S and choose Full screen in Snipping Tool.

These built-in workflows are available on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn, and is usually near the keyboard’s upper-right corner.
Method 1: save a full-screen image automatically
Use Windows + PrtScn
- Arrange the desktop exactly as you want it to appear. Close private windows and move the pointer if it should not be visible.
- Press Windows + PrtScn together. The display may briefly dim.
- Open File Explorer and select Pictures, then Screenshots.
- Open, rename, move, or share the resulting image. Windows creates the file in that Screenshots subfolder rather than leaving it only in memory.
This is the best choice when the finished file matters more than immediate editing. On a multi-monitor PC, the capture covers the connected display area that Windows treats as the screen; check the saved image before sharing if your monitors use different scaling or arrangements.
Method 2: copy the whole screen to the clipboard
Use PrtScn by itself
- Press PrtScn (or PrtSc/PrntScrn).
- Open Paint, a document editor, email composer, chat, or another app that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the captured screen.
- Use that app’s Save or Export command to create a PNG or another supported image file.
PrtScn does not normally create a file by itself. It places an image of the entire screen in the clipboard, so a missing file in PicturesScreenshots is expected when this is the shortcut you used. Clipboard contents can also be replaced by your next copy operation, so paste and save promptly.

Method 3: use Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode
Capture, edit, and share
- Press Windows + Shift + S, or open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- In the capture toolbar, choose Full screen. Snipping Tool also offers rectangle, freeform, window, and video snip modes.
- After the capture, select the notification or open the Snipping Tool window to annotate, crop, save, or share the image.
Choose this route when you need a quick markup, a crop, or a different capture mode. For a menu that disappears as soon as you press a key, set a delay in Snipping Tool, arrange the menu, and let the timed capture run.
What “full screen” means here
Full screen captures the display immediately rather than asking you to drag a rectangle. It is different from Window, which captures one application, and from Rectangle or Freeform, which capture only a selected area.
Keyboard variations and laptops
When the Print Screen key is combined with another key
Compact and laptop keyboards sometimes share Print Screen with another function. If pressing PrtScn does nothing, try the keyboard’s Fn modifier—for example, Fn + PrtScn—according to the labels on your keyboard. An external USB keyboard with a clearly labeled Print Screen key is optional; Windows itself includes the required capture tools.

When Print Screen opens Snipping Tool
Windows settings can assign the Print Screen key to open screen snipping instead of copying the entire display. If that happens, use the Snipping Tool overlay and select Full screen, or use Windows + PrtScn when you want automatic file saving.

For a single application, click its title bar to make it active, then press Alt + Print Screen. Windows copies that active-window image to the clipboard; paste it with Ctrl + V and save it from the destination app. This avoids exposing other windows on the desktop.
Where screenshots are saved
Automatic file capture
A capture made with Windows + PrtScn is placed in the current user’s PicturesScreenshots folder. In File Explorer, choose Pictures in the left navigation pane and open Screenshots. If your Pictures folder is redirected to OneDrive or another managed location, follow the Pictures shortcut shown by File Explorer; the Screenshots subfolder belongs under that location.

Clipboard capture
Captures made with PrtScn or Alt + Print Screen have no file path until you paste and save them. Paint is a simple destination: paste, select File → Save as, and choose the format and folder you need.
Common problems and fixes
Nothing appears in the Screenshots folder
You probably pressed PrtScn alone. Paste the clipboard image with Ctrl + V, or repeat the capture with Windows + PrtScn for automatic saving.

- Try Fn with the Print Screen key on a laptop or compact keyboard.
- Check whether the key is labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn.
- Use Windows + Shift + S and choose Full screen as a keyboard-independent fallback.
The wrong monitor or scaling appears
Arrange the displays before capturing and inspect the saved image. Display scaling, rotation, and a disconnected monitor can change the area Windows includes. For a single application, use Alt + Print Screen instead of exposing the whole desktop.

A menu closes before it is captured
Open Snipping Tool, set a capture delay, open the menu, and allow the delayed full-screen capture to run. Avoid clicking elsewhere during the countdown.
You need to remove sensitive information
Do not rely on cropping after sharing. Review the image for passwords, notifications, private tabs, addresses, and other monitors first; crop or annotate in Snipping Tool or an image editor, then save a separate sanitized copy.

Choose the least destructive workflow
- Use Windows + PrtScn when you need a faithful desktop file with no intermediate app.
- Use PrtScn when the destination app will resize, annotate, or immediately embed the image.
- Use Snipping Tool when timing, markup, or a specific capture region matters.
Check before you send
- Confirm the capture includes the intended display or window.
- Read small text at 100% zoom and verify that menus and notifications are not covering it.
- Save in a format appropriate to the destination: PNG for crisp interface text, JPEG for smaller photographic images, or the format required by your editor.
- Keep the original until the recipient confirms it is usable.
