Oracle’s current documentation calls these workers parallel execution servers or PX servers; older Oracle documentation calls them query server processes. This explanation follows Oracle terminology because the label is not established here as a universal term across database vendors.
How a parallel query server works
For a statement eligible for parallel execution, Oracle’s optimizer and parallelization logic determine which operations can run in parallel and choose a degree of parallelism (DOP). The user session or its shadow process acts as the query coordinator for that statement. The coordinator obtains parallel execution servers, assigns work, gathers partial results, and returns the completed result to the session.

- Choose parallel work: Oracle determines whether the statement, or particular operations within it, can run in parallel and selects a DOP.
- Assign operations: The query coordinator enlists PX servers to perform parts of the work, such as scans, joins, or sorts.
- Exchange intermediate results: In a producer/consumer pattern, one set of servers can produce rows for another set performing later operations.
- Finish and return: The coordinator handles work that cannot be parallelized, combines results, and returns the result to the user session.
Oracle summarizes the concept in its Oracle AI Database 26 documentation: “Parallel execution enables many processes working together to execute single operation, such as a SQL query.”

DOP describes the number of parallel execution servers associated with a single operation. It is not necessarily the total number of worker processes active across every operation in the statement. Producer and consumer operations can overlap, so more workers may be active in total than the DOP for one operation. Treat DOP as an operation-level measure, not a guaranteed cap on all parallel workers.

Parallel versus serial execution
Serial execution uses one process for an operation; parallel execution divides eligible work among multiple processes and adds coordination. Parallel execution may reduce elapsed time for large, data-intensive work when resources are available, but it is not automatically faster. The right choice depends on data volume, concurrency, the execution plan, available workers and hardware, and whether elapsed time or resource efficiency matters most.
When parallel execution may help
Oracle recommends considering parallel execution when a query references a large data set, shorter elapsed time is important, concurrency is low, and CPU, memory, and I/O capacity are available. It may provide little benefit when those conditions are missing. Short OLTP-style queries may finish too quickly to offset the cost of coordinating workers.
- Large data set and available capacity: Dividing substantial work can make parallel execution useful when CPU, memory, and I/O resources can support it.
- High concurrency or resource contention: Additional workers can compete with other work; Oracle warns that parallel execution can reduce performance on overutilized systems or where I/O bandwidth is limited.
- Small, brief queries: The coordination overhead may outweigh the time saved by parallel work.
These are Oracle’s workload guidelines, not guarantees for every database engine or query. Oracle’s documentation gives illustrative DOP and server-count examples, not general performance statistics; no fixed speedup can be inferred from them.
Terminology to keep straight
Parallel query server and query coordinator
The parallel query server is a worker. The query coordinator directs the statement’s parallel work and gathers its results. They are distinct roles.
Parallel execution server and older Oracle terms
Current Oracle documentation uses “parallel execution server” and “PX server.” Older Oracle material uses “query server process.” The underlying explanation here is specific to Oracle’s terminology and documentation.
Parallel Query and the legacy Parallel Server option
Oracle’s legacy documentation distinguishes the Parallel Query feature from the historical Parallel Server option. The similar names do not mean they are the same feature. See Oracle’s legacy Parallel Query Concepts documentation.
