A nonlinear video editor (NLE) is software that lets you reach and change any clip at any point in a project, without working from the first moment to the last. You arrange clips on a timeline, and in common NLE workflows your changes are stored in the project while the original footage stays as it was.
The definition in plain terms
“NLE” stands for “nonlinear editing” or “nonlinear editor,” depending on context. It can name the method, the application, or the whole editing system. Adobe’s own explainer and glossary resources treat it as editing where you can access and rearrange material in any order rather than assembling it strictly front to back.

How a nonlinear editor works
The workflow is the same in broad strokes across programs:
- Import or link your media (video, audio, images).
- Select clips and place them on a timeline.
- Trim, cut, copy, move or replace clips wherever you like, including in the middle of a sequence that already exists.
- Preview the result and keep revising.
A typical interface has a timeline, a preview window and editing controls, though names and layouts differ between programs. Because you never have to rebuild everything before the point you are changing, a late change to scene three does not mean redoing scenes one and two.

Nonlinear is not the same as nondestructive
These are two distinct ideas that usually appear together in modern software:
- Nonlinear describes access order: you can work on any part of the program in any sequence.
- Nondestructive describes what happens to your source files: edits are instructions saved in the project, not changes written into the original media.
Two vendors describe the second idea for their own products. Adobe’s Premiere documentation says: “Editing on the timeline is non-destructive: you can trim, cut, copy, and move clips without altering the original media.” Apple’s Final Cut Pro user guide says: “No matter how you edit clips in Final Cut Pro, the underlying media is never touched.” These are product-specific statements, not universal technical standards, so check how a given program handles your files, especially when it exports, transcodes or caches media.

What nonlinear contrasts with
Linear editing follows a set sequence. The classic example is tape-to-tape editing, where selected material is recorded onto a master tape in order, so changing something earlier generally means redoing what follows. Nonlinear editing removes that constraint: you change a project timeline instead of re-recording a sequential result. This is a workflow contrast; it does not mean every earlier form of film editing was strictly linear.

| Aspect | Linear editing | Nonlinear editing |
|---|---|---|
| Access order | Sequential | Any clip, any point |
| Making revisions | Re-record or replace the sequential result | Change the project timeline |
| Source material | Tied to the recorded result | Commonly preserved unchanged in the project |
