A network storage device is a storage system connected to a computer network so multiple authorized users and devices can store and retrieve shared files from one central location. A network-attached storage (NAS) appliance is the most common dedicated form: it provides file access over the network rather than connecting to just one computer.
How a network storage device works
Instead of plugging a drive directly into one computer, a network storage device joins a local network. Authorized computers and other devices then reach its shared folders over that network. The storage is centralized, while access can come from more than one client.

A NAS provides file-level access: clients request and work with files and folders. It commonly uses network file protocols such as SMB or NFS; SNIA also identifies CIFS, an earlier name associated with the SMB family. The exact protocols available depend on the device and its configuration. SNIA’s NAS overview and HPE’s NAS explanation describe these file-access services.

- Shared household or team files: Keep documents in a common location that authorized users can reach from their devices.
- Backups and recovery: Store copies of computer files centrally to help restore them after loss or device failure.
- Photos, video, and archives: Keep large or infrequently accessed collections on shared storage.
- Media streaming: Make stored media available to compatible devices on the network.
- Organizational workloads: NAS can also support uses such as virtual desktop infrastructure and application development. AWS’s NAS overview outlines these examples.
How NAS differs from other storage
| Type | Connection and access | Typical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| NAS | Connected to a computer network; provides file-level access to multiple authorized clients. | Shared files are served from a central storage system. |
| Direct-attached storage (DAS) | Connected directly to a computer. | Access is centered on the connected computer, rather than provided as a network file service. |
| Storage area network (SAN) | Uses a storage network to provide block-level storage. | Often used in more specialized environments; setup and management can be more complex and costly than NAS, according to NetApp’s NAS and SAN comparison. |
| Public cloud storage | Hosted by a provider and accessed over the internet. | The provider manages the storage service; a NAS is generally managed by its owner or internal IT team. IBM’s NAS overview explains this distinction. |
Local access, remote access, and management
NAS files are ordinarily available to authorized devices on the local network. Access from outside that network is possible when remote access is configured, but it is not automatic simply because a device is a NAS. How remote access is provided depends on the particular system and its setup.

- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
With a NAS, the owner or an organization’s IT team is typically responsible for managing the device. Public cloud storage, by contrast, is hosted and managed by a third-party provider. The distinction is about who operates the storage; it does not mean a NAS can never be reached remotely.
Drives, RAID, and backup
NAS appliances do not all arrive in the same condition. Some are diskless and require separately selected drives; others come with drives installed. Check the device’s compatibility information before buying drives, since there is no single drive model that fits every NAS.

- Subscription-Free Personal Cloud – Store, back up, and manage all your videos, music, and photos and access them anytime without paying any monthly fees.
- Storage Purpose-Built for Data Security – A NAS designed to keep your data safe, the LS200 features a closed system to reduce vulnerabilities from 3rd party apps and SSL encryption for secure file transfers.
- Back Up Multiple Computers & Devices – NAS Navigator management utility and PC backup software included. NAS Navigator 2 for macOS 15 and earlier. You can set up automated backups of data on your computers.
Some systems use RAID configurations to maintain access to data after a drive failure, depending on the RAID level and setup. RAID is not a complete independent backup: it does not by itself protect against every cause of data loss, such as accidental deletion or damage affecting the whole device. Keep a separate backup of important files. HPE and AWS describe NAS configurations and uses in their respective NAS and NAS explainers.

A network storage device is shared storage that other authorized devices reach through a network. NAS is the familiar appliance version, suited to centralized file access; DAS connects directly to a computer, SAN typically delivers block storage, and public cloud storage is run by a provider.
