What Is a Network Operating System (NOS), and What Does It Do?

A network operating system provides networking functions on routers and switches—or, in older LAN usage, manages shared files, printers, users, and security.

A network operating system (NOS) is software that provides networking functions on devices such as routers and switches. It can handle tasks such as routing, switching, device management, and communication with the hardware that forwards network traffic. The term also has an older meaning: server software that manages shared files, printers, user accounts, and security across a local network.

What does a network operating system do?

In contemporary networking, a NOS is the software layer that makes a router or switch perform and manage its network role. Depending on the system and deployment, it may provide routing protocols, switching functions, device monitoring, telemetry, automation interfaces, and tools for managing the hardware.

It is not simply any operating system that can connect to the internet. A general-purpose computer operating system may include networking features, but the term NOS usually refers either to software built for network infrastructure or, in older LAN terminology, to software that coordinates shared resources on a network.

How does a NOS work on a router or switch?

A NOS provides an environment for network functions and management software to run. The exact design differs by product. Cisco DevNet’s SONiC architecture is one concrete example: its components include routing protocols, LLDP, SNMP, link aggregation, and device monitoring. A Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI) gives software a uniform way to control forwarding hardware, such as a switching ASIC, a network processing unit (NPU), or a software switch.

  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

That SONiC architecture is not a universal blueprint. Other NOS designs and feature sets vary. Cisco’s description of IOS XR7 highlights themes such as modular feature loading, management APIs, telemetry, automation, and security; those are vendor-described capabilities, not promises that every NOS supports the same features.

What are examples of network operating systems?

  • SONiC: Cisco DevNet describes it as an open-source NOS based on Debian Linux that runs on routers and switches. Cisco also describes its software stack as usable across hardware from multiple vendors; that does not mean every SONiC deployment supports every device.
  • Cisco IOS: Cisco networking software. Cisco’s official IOS documentation describes it as software at the heart of its internetworking solutions.
  • Cisco IOS XR7: A Cisco network operating system whose vendor-described design themes include modularity, APIs, telemetry, automation, and security.
  • Cisco NX-OS: Cisco documentation identifies it as the operating system for Nexus switches.

These examples are not automatically interchangeable. A choice depends on the target router or switch, supported hardware and software releases, required protocols and management functions, and the operational model. Check the relevant vendor’s current platform documentation before assuming a NOS supports a particular device or feature.

Why does “network operating system” sometimes mean LAN server software?

Older textbooks and LAN discussions use NOS to mean server software that lets connected computers share and manage resources. Those resources can include files and printers, along with user accounts and security controls. This usage is related to networking, but it describes a different role from the software running the networking functions of a router or switch.

When reading about a NOS, use context to distinguish the meanings: references to routing, switching, or network-device hardware usually mean an infrastructure operating system; references to shared files, printers, users, or LAN resource management usually mean the older server-oriented sense.
