A neocloud is a cloud provider whose central focus is GPU compute and AI infrastructure. Hyperscalers, by contrast, offer broad cloud platforms in which GPU services are one part of a larger portfolio. The difference is mainly one of emphasis—not a formal industry classification or a hard boundary between what each provider can offer.
What is a neocloud?
“Neocloud” is a market term for an AI-first cloud provider built around accelerated computing, especially GPU capacity. Microsoft uses the term to describe providers focused on AI workloads, while NVIDIA describes its Cloud Partners as providers delivering infrastructure purpose-built for modern AI workloads at production scale. Microsoft’s overview and NVIDIA’s partner directory illustrate the usage.

It is a useful shorthand, not a certification or standards-defined class. There is no universal membership test established by these sources, and the label alone does not tell you what hardware, networking, software, contract terms, or managed services a provider offers.
How does a neocloud differ from a hyperscaler?
The main distinction is what the provider makes central to its business. A neocloud concentrates on GPU-heavy AI infrastructure; a hyperscaler offers a broad cloud platform spanning many kinds of compute and adjacent services. This is a difference in product emphasis, not an absolute capability line: hyperscalers also offer GPUs, and neoclouds may provide services beyond GPU instances.

| Question | GPU-first provider (often called a neocloud) | Hyperscaler |
|---|---|---|
| What is central to the offer? | GPU compute and AI infrastructure. | A broad cloud platform; GPU services may be one component. |
| What might you access? | GPU instances, clusters, platforms, or marketplace access; details vary by provider. | A wider portfolio of cloud services, alongside available accelerated compute. |
| What should you verify? | Accelerator model, workload performance, capacity, service model, and the platform around the compute. | The same workload and capacity details, plus how the broader platform fits your project. |
This comparison describes category-level emphasis, not a guarantee about a specific provider. Check provider documentation for the actual product and service boundaries. Microsoft frames the practical choice as neoclouds, hyperscalers, and hybrid cloud; its overview is a useful starting point.
What do neocloud providers look like in practice?
The category includes different providers, and directory listings should be treated as dated examples rather than a complete or permanent roster. NVIDIA’s partner directory lists CoreWeave, Crusoe, Lambda, and Nebius in its AI cloud partner ecosystem. In a May 31, 2026 update, NVIDIA said CoreWeave, Crusoe, Lambda, Nebius, Vultr, and YTL had achieved Exemplar Cloud status. See the NVIDIA Cloud Partners directory and NVIDIA’s May 2026 announcement.
Provider infrastructure can also be designed around tightly connected accelerators. NVIDIA reported that CoreWeave launched cloud instances based on its GB200 NVL72 platform in February 2025. NVIDIA describes that platform as a rack-scale solution with a 72-GPU NVLink domain. That is one concrete architecture example; it should not be assumed to describe every neocloud. NVIDIA’s announcement provides the specifics.

How to compare GPU cloud providers
The label is not enough to choose a service. Compare the workload, available capacity, service model, and platform fit using provider-specific details.
1. Match performance claims to your workload
Ask which benchmark, workload, accelerator configuration, and measurement method support a performance claim. Results from different configurations or workloads are not automatically comparable. NVIDIA’s Exemplar Cloud initiative says it uses performance benchmarking recipes to establish standardized comparisons across cloud providers; its AI cloud performance page describes the approach.
2. Confirm the accelerator and capacity you can actually access
Check the specific accelerator model, quantity, location, and availability for your project rather than relying on a general capacity statement. Availability can change. NVIDIA’s May 19, 2025 DGX Cloud Lepton announcement describes a marketplace connecting developers with GPUs from a global network of cloud providers; it is an example of one access model, not a guarantee of availability for every user or workload. Read NVIDIA’s announcement.

3. Decide how much of the stack you want managed
Establish whether you need direct infrastructure access, an integrated AI cloud, or a broad cloud platform with other services around the compute. Providers carrying the same category label are not interchangeable; compare their documented deployment and service models rather than inferring them from the term “neocloud.”
4. Check the platform beyond the GPUs
Consider what else the project needs from its cloud environment. Compare the surrounding services and workflows against your requirements; do not assume either that a GPU-first provider lacks adjacent cloud functionality or that a hyperscaler’s broader portfolio is automatically a better fit.

Market forecasts and partnership targets describe expected or planned growth, not present-day operating capacity. Gartner’s June 23, 2026 press release forecast that neocloud providers would capture 20% of a $267 billion AI cloud market by 2030. That is Gartner’s projection, not a measured market share or a settled outcome. Gartner’s forecast gives the date and context.

In a March 11, 2026 announcement, NVIDIA said its partnership with Nebius would enable deployment of more than 5 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems by the end of 2030. This is a future target described by NVIDIA, not a report of capacity already deployed. NVIDIA’s announcement sets out the plan.
When does the neocloud label help?
The term is useful when you want to distinguish a GPU-first AI infrastructure provider from a broad cloud platform. It can help narrow the field, but it cannot answer whether a particular service has the right accelerator, usable capacity, performance, service model, or surrounding platform for your workload. Those specifics—not the label—should decide the comparison.
