The term describes a broad category, not a fixed set of abilities: one model might accept images and respond with text, while another may also work with audio or video.
What does “multimodal” mean in AI?
A modality is a form of information, such as text, an image, audio, or video. A system is multimodal when it works across more than one of these forms. In an MLLM, a language model is part of a system that can process or generate information across modalities.

For example, a visual MLLM may take an image and a written question as input, then produce a text answer. That is multimodal even if the system does not generate images or accept audio. The Association for Computational Linguistics’ 2024 survey describes visual-based MLLMs as integrating visual and textual modalities with a dialogue interface and instruction-following capabilities: The Revolution of Multimodal Large Language Models: A Survey.
What can a multimodal large language model do?
Capabilities depend on the particular system, its training, and its intended tasks. The ACL survey covers visual understanding and grounding, image generation and editing, and applications in specific domains. A model may, for instance, answer questions about an image; another may generate or edit images. The shared label does not mean they offer the same features.

Emu3 illustrates a broader design and task range: its 2025 paper describes a system that represents images, text, video, and actions as sequences, including an extension to robotic manipulation. This is one example, not a claim that every MLLM handles video or controls actions. See Multimodal learning with next-token prediction for large multimodal models.
How are multimodal large language models built?
There is no single required MLLM architecture. Research includes different ways to encode information from separate modalities and make it usable by a language model, as well as designs that represent multiple modalities in shared sequences.
Visual encoder, adapter, and language model
A common vision-language pattern uses a visual encoder to process images, an adapter or alignment component to connect visual representations with the language model, and the language model to handle text and responses. The ACL survey reviews variations in architecture, alignment, and training. These components describe a common pattern, not a checklist every MLLM must follow.

Emu3 takes a different approach. Its decoder-only Transformer uses discrete representations of images, text, video, and actions in sequences, with next-token prediction as a shared training objective. Its paper describes a vision tokenizer, mixed multimodal training, post-training, and autoregressive inference. This is another architecture choice rather than a universal definition.
Does multimodal mean human-like reasoning?
No. Processing more than one modality does not establish that a model understands the world or reasons as a person does. A Nature Machine Intelligence study published on 15 January 2025 tested selected vision-based models on image-and-language tasks involving intuitive physics, causal reasoning, and intuitive psychology. The authors reported that none of the tested models matched human-level performance in any of those studied domains: Visual cognition in multimodal large language models.
That finding applies to the models, tasks, and domains evaluated in the study; it does not show that every current model fails at every kind of reasoning. It does underline why a modality label alone is not evidence of human-like cognition.

When choosing or evaluating a model, check its documented capabilities rather than relying on the word “multimodal.” Look for:

- Inputs: Does it accept text, images, audio, video, or another form of data?
- Outputs: Does it respond with text, generate images or audio, or produce another kind of output?
- Tasks: Is it intended for image question answering, grounding, generation, editing, or another use?
- Evidence and limits: What evaluations support the claimed abilities, and which tasks or conditions were tested?
These distinctions matter because a system that can interpret images and answer in text is not necessarily able to create images, understand video, or work with audio.
