A liquid staking provider stakes proof-of-stake assets for you and issues a liquid token or similar claim representing your stake and rewards. On Ethereum, the provider may pool ETH and coordinate validators; the receipt token can be traded or used in supported applications, but it also adds provider, contract, liquidity, and token-price risks.
What a liquid staking provider does
Ethereum does not natively provide pooled staking. A liquid staking service or protocol handles the pooling and validator coordination separately from Ethereum itself. In a transparent pool design, a smart contract accepts deposits and issues receipt tokens, while node operators run validators using the pooled assets.

The token holder is not necessarily an Ethereum validator or a staker in the protocol’s own view. Instead, the holder has a claim on the provider or smart contract staking on their behalf. That means the position depends not only on Ethereum, but also on the provider’s contracts, governance, operators, and redemption arrangements. Ethereum.org explains pooled staking.

In those products, custody and eligibility may be set by company terms, and users may not be able to verify on-chain how assets are used. The word “staking” alone does not prove that a product routes assets to validators; some products may instead involve lending or other activities.

How a liquid staking token accounts for rewards
Providers commonly use one of two accounting models. Both deliver rewards net of protocol fees, and neither is inherently better. The choice can affect wallet displays, compatibility with decentralized applications, and tax treatment in some jurisdictions.
Rebasing tokens
With a rebasing token such as stETH, rewards accrue through an increase in the holder’s token balance. The token is designed to remain roughly equal in value to one ETH. Some rebasing tokens also have wrapped, non-rebasing versions for applications that do not support balance changes.

Exchange-rate tokens
With an exchange-rate token such as rETH, the balance stays the same while each token becomes redeemable for a growing amount of ETH as rewards accrue.
How exit and redemption work
A holder generally has two routes out: request redemption through the protocol or sell the token on a secondary market. Protocol redemption depends on available liquidity and validator exit processing. A secondary-market price can differ from the value of the ETH backing the token, especially during market stress.

For rETH, Rocket Pool says direct redemption depends on ETH being available in its pool. If pool liquidity is insufficient, a holder may need to use a secondary market instead. Rocket Pool’s documentation describes its staking mechanics.
Examples of different provider models
- Lido and stETH: Lido describes a DAO-controlled smart contract that stakes deposits through elected staking providers and issues tradable liquid tokens. Its help article, dated March 24, 2023, is useful for understanding the basic mechanism, not for establishing current fees or operator details. Read Lido’s explanation of liquid staking.
- Rocket Pool and rETH: Rocket Pool documents an exchange-rate token and says liquid stakers can deposit as little as 0.01 ETH. Direct redemption depends on available pool liquidity. These are product mechanics, not a comparative endorsement. See Rocket Pool’s documentation.
- Coinbase and cbETH: Coinbase identifies itself as the staking provider and token issuer. Its white paper describes cbETH’s floating conversion rate as accounting for staking and unstaking activity, rewards, penalties, and fees. Product details may change. Read the cbETH white paper.
These examples illustrate that a provider can be a smart-contract protocol with governance or a centralized platform offering a tokenized product under its own custody and service terms.

Risks beyond ordinary staking
Liquid staking retains proof-of-stake risks and adds risks tied to the provider and the receipt token:
- Validator performance and slashing: Downtime, operator mistakes, misconfiguration, or malicious behavior can lead to penalties or loss of stake.
- Smart-contract and protocol risk: Bugs or design limitations can cause losses or unexpected behavior. Audits and reviews do not make a system risk-free.
- Liquidity and market-price risk: An LST may trade below the value of its backing, while redemption may be delayed by liquidity or validator exit queues.
- Governance and upgrade risk: Protocol changes can affect fees, operators, reward mechanics, or token behavior.
- Operator concentration and dependencies: A concentrated operator set can create single points of failure and wider network concerns.
- Variable rewards: Displayed APR or APY is an estimate, not a promise. Rewards may vary or be zero, and severe penalties can lead to losses.
Lido’s risk disclosure describes risks specific to its system; these issues are not exclusive to Lido.

How to assess a provider
Use the same questions for each service rather than assuming that a familiar token or a particular reward model is automatically safer:
- Who controls the assets and withdrawal keys?
- Are the contracts open source, audited, and inspectable on-chain?
- Is the node-operator set public and distributed, and how are operators selected?
- Does the token rebase, or does its exchange rate accrue rewards?
- How does protocol redemption work, what liquidity is available, and what queues or delays may apply?
- What fees apply, and who has authority to change them?
- What governance, upgrade, slashing, and loss-protection arrangements exist?
- Does the product actually stake through validators, or does it use lending, trading, or another activity?
Ethereum.org says there is no single inherent preference between the two common reward-accounting designs. Focus on custody, liquidity, application compatibility, and the risks you are willing to accept. See Ethereum.org’s pooled-staking overview.
How widespread liquid staking is
Ethereum.org’s page, last updated August 17, 2026, estimates that around one-third of all staked ETH is held through liquid staking protocols. This is an approximate share, not a fixed market statistic. Separately, the European Banking Authority and European Securities and Markets Authority reported liquid-staking total value locked of USD 44 billion as of October 2024, with nearly 80% in Ethereum-based protocols. That is a historical dollar-denominated figure, not the same measure as Ethereum.org’s share of staked ETH. Read the joint EBA-ESMA report.

Keeping an LST in self-custody
A hardware wallet is an optional way to manage an LST in self-custody; it does not remove protocol, smart-contract, slashing, liquidity, or token-price risks. Ledger’s July 8, 2026 article says stETH can be managed through Ledger Wallet as an ERC-20 token. Read Ledger’s stETH wallet guidance.
