The liquids form separate layers, and metal ions move through the salt as the battery discharges or charges. The technology is designed for large-scale electricity storage, not as a consumer battery.
How is a liquid metal battery arranged?
In the MIT design, the cell contains three liquid layers: a lower-density liquid metal at the top, molten salt in the middle, and a denser liquid metal at the bottom. The metals serve as electrodes; the molten salt is the electrolyte. Because the liquids differ in density and do not readily mix, they separate into layers.

This is different from a conventional lithium-ion cell, which uses solid electrodes. In a liquid metal battery, the electrodes themselves are liquid.
How does it charge and discharge?
Discharging
Metal atoms at the upper, negative electrode release electrons and become positively charged ions. The ions pass through the molten salt to the lower electrode. Meanwhile, electrons travel through an external circuit, where they can provide electricity to a connected load.

Charging
Charging reverses those reactions: electrical energy drives the ions and electrons back toward their original arrangement.
What was the first prototype made of?
The first prototype developed by MIT researchers Donald Sadoway and David Bradwell and their collaborators used magnesium at the top, antimony at the bottom, and a salt mixture containing magnesium chloride as the electrolyte. MIT reported that the three components separated into layers and the prototype behaved as predicted. That recipe describes an early prototype, not a verified chemistry for a currently marketed system.

Sadoway described the inspiration as asking, “Could we run the smelter in reverse so it gives back its electricity?” In 2010, Sadoway, Bradwell, and Luis Ortiz founded Liquid Metal Battery Corporation, later named Ambri, to develop and scale the technology. Designers can choose materials to balance factors such as cost, availability, operating temperature, and cell voltage.

What is a liquid metal battery intended to do?
The stated application is grid-scale electricity storage: storing energy, including electricity generated by wind or solar, and releasing it when needed. MIT’s department profile says Ambri began testing its system at Microsoft in 2022 and describes a planned utility deployment. Those are historical project statements; they do not establish whether either project is operating now or whether the system is currently available to buy.

What performance claims have been reported?
In a 2022 account, MIT reported a lifespan of more than 20 years and retention of 99 percent of capacity over 5,000 charging cycles. The same account said the system contains no combustible materials. These are claims reported by MIT; that account does not establish independent validation or provide a like-for-like comparison with competing grid-storage products.

What should not be assumed?
