What Is a Light-Field Camera? Definition and How It Works

A light-field camera records light direction as well as intensity, allowing software to refocus images after capture and, in some systems, derive views or depth.

A light-field camera, also called a plenoptic camera, records information about the direction light travels as well as its intensity. That extra directional information lets software computationally refocus an image after capture and, in some systems, derive nearby viewpoints or depth information.

What does “light field” mean in a camera?

A conventional camera records light intensity at sensor locations to form a two-dimensional image. A light-field camera aims to record more: information about the rays reaching the sensor, including their direction. This richer capture can be processed into different image outputs, but it is not simply a conventional photograph in which every depth is already sharp.

How does a light-field camera work?

The microlens array records directional samples

In a common plenoptic design, a microlens array sits between the main lens and the image sensor. The main lens forms an image, while the smaller lenses encode samples associated with different incoming ray directions. The array’s geometry affects how those directional samples are recorded. Designs differ, so this arrangement is a common architecture rather than a description of every system. Stanford’s foundational account explains the goal of measuring ray-direction information, and Christopher Hahne’s plenoptic camera model discusses the optical geometry and multiview extraction.

Capturing direction involves a trade-off

The sensor samples are used to represent both spatial image information and angular information. In effect, some sensor sampling is allocated to direction, rather than all of it contributing to a conventional two-dimensional image. As a result, spatial resolution, angular resolution, field of view, and the camera’s intended use depend on the design and processing. A light-field camera should not be assumed to match a conventional camera’s image detail or to provide the same performance as another light-field model.

How does a light-field camera enable digital refocusing?

After capture, software can combine samples associated with rays from a scene point to render an image focused at a selected plane. This makes it possible to change the apparent focus after taking the picture, within the limits of the recorded data and optical configuration. Refocusing is computational: the camera does not produce one ordinary image with every depth perfectly sharp.

The available refocus range is constrained, not unlimited. In the geometry explained by Hahne, refocusing on a plane closer to the camera involves combining samples from microlenses that are farther apart. The captured angular samples and the camera’s optical setup determine which focus changes can be reconstructed. See Hahne’s explanation of plenoptic refocusing.

What else can light-field data be used for?

Extracting nearby viewpoints

Because the capture contains directional samples, processing can select different subsets to produce nearby sub-aperture views. This is distinct from moving the camera to take a new photograph: the views are derived from the rays recorded in the original capture, so the camera’s data and design constrain the result.

Estimating depth for measurement

Some industrial systems use light-field captures to derive depth. Raytrix describes its cameras as recording a 2D image and metrically calibrated 3D depth information in a single shot with one camera and one main lens. That is the manufacturer’s description of its technology, not an independent comparison of performance. Raytrix also notes that effective lateral resolution is highest at the focus plane and decreases as a subject moves closer to the camera. Its 3D light-field technology page gives its account of the system.

Are all light-field cameras alike?

No. Light-field designs are suited to different tasks, and their measurement quality depends on design and calibration. A 2023 overview of measurement technologies emphasizes the need to choose a design appropriate to the application and required accuracy. When evaluating a system, relevant factors include its intended task, spatial and angular resolution, depth range, calibration requirements, working distance, field of view, processing workflow, and supported software and file formats.

Historical examples illustrate the range of applications: a 2015 academic chapter distinguishes Lytro’s consumer-oriented plenoptic 1.0 design from Raytrix’s industrial-oriented plenoptic 2.0 design. These are design examples, not evidence of current retail availability. The chapter is available as “Plenoptic Cameras”; the measurement overview is “Measurement Technologies of Light Field Camera: An Overview” (2023).
