What Is a LAN Network Manager? Role, Duties, and IBM’s Legacy Software

A LAN network manager may oversee a network’s reliability, security, and support—or handle daily technical work. The phrase also has historical software and product-specific meanings.

A LAN network manager is usually the person accountable for a local area network’s reliable, secure operation. Depending on the employer, the role may focus on policy and oversight, hands-on network administration, or a mix of both. The phrase also names IBM’s historical Token Ring management software, a separate meaning from the job title.

What does a LAN network manager do?

There is no single, cross-industry duty list for this job title. In one organization, the LAN network manager may set expectations, coordinate support, and oversee security and change control without personally carrying out daily technical work. Elsewhere, the role may include installation, monitoring, troubleshooting, recordkeeping, and user assistance.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s NDPD Operational Directives Manual offers a specific governance-focused example. It describes the EPA LAN Manager as a designated federal employee with overall responsibility for the LAN’s “operation, integrity, and usefulness.” The manual assigns this role duties such as ensuring compliance with policies and standards, coordinating support personnel, using a change-management process, conducting risk and security assessments, and reporting security breaches. These are EPA policy responsibilities, not a universal definition for every employer. EPA NDPD Operational Directives Manual, directive 310.03

A secondary career reference describes a more operational mix of possible duties: coordinating network installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting; monitoring network performance; keeping hardware and software records; applying security procedures; and helping users. Treat these as examples, since job descriptions and team structures vary. CareerExplorer: LAN Network Manager

Is a LAN network manager the same as a network administrator?

Not necessarily. Some employers may use the titles similarly or combine the work, but the EPA manual illustrates a distinction: its LAN Manager holds overall accountability, while its LAN System Administrator is responsible for hands-on daily operations and maintenance. That division is specific to the EPA document; it should not be assumed to apply to other organizations.

What was IBM LAN Network Manager?

IBM LAN Network Manager (LNM) was also the name of a historical network-management application. IBM described it as an OS/2 Extended Edition-based application for centrally controlling Token Ring local-area networks. LNM communicated with LAN Station Manager software running on individual end stations. This is a software product meaning, not a description of a person’s job. Cisco’s historical IBM networking documentation also discusses two-way communication with IBM LNM for central management of Token Ring networks. It separately describes CiscoWorks capabilities for configuration, monitoring, and diagnostics, including access to traffic and error statistics through SNMP MIB attributes. Those references concern legacy networking contexts and do not establish that IBM LNM is a current mainstream product. Cisco IBM networking documentation

Can “LAN network manager” mean a software access role?

Yes. Product documentation may use similar wording for a permission role rather than an occupation or standalone application. For example, Cisco Data Center Network Manager (DCNM) Release 10.3(x) lists lan-network-admin as a role and ties permissions to the client perspective. That label is specific to the documented DCNM release; it is not a general industry definition, and those exact permissions should not be presumed current in later versions.
