A hybrid hard drive, commonly called an SSHD (solid-state hybrid drive), combines a conventional magnetic hard disk with a smaller amount of NAND flash memory. The hard disk provides most of the storage capacity; the flash acts as a cache for data the drive expects to be used often.
What a hybrid hard drive contains
An SSHD keeps the rotating magnetic platters and mechanical read/write parts of a hard disk drive (HDD), while adding NAND flash memory inside the same drive. Some designs may also use a DRAM buffer. The flash is not a separate, full-capacity solid-state drive (SSD) volume: it is a smaller cache managed by the drive.

Toshiba’s technical guide to SSD, SSHD and HDD storage describes a controller that learns the system’s access patterns and moves data among DRAM, NAND and the disk. Frequently accessed data can be placed in NAND so later access to that data may be faster.

How SSHD caching affects performance
The potential benefit depends on what the drive has cached. Repeated access to cached data can be quicker than access to the same data from the rotating disk. Data that remains on the disk still has HDD-style access behavior. An SSHD therefore does not make every task as fast as it would be on an SSD, and the available technical descriptions do not establish one universal speed advantage across workloads.

For example, a drive may learn that certain files are used regularly and keep them in its flash cache. The cache is finite, however, and it does not turn the entire drive into flash storage. The controller, rather than the user, manages this caching behavior.

This distinction matters when comparing products: an SSHD is an integrated hard drive with a flash cache, not simply a small SSD volume alongside a separate hard drive.

Specifications vary by model
Hybrid-drive specifications are not universal. Seagate’s Laptop SSHD product manual lists the ST1000LX003 (1 TB) and ST750LX006 (750 GB). For those two models, the manual specifies 32 GB of NAND flash and a 5400 RPM spindle. These are model-specific manufacturer figures, not specifications for every SSHD or evidence that the models are currently sold.

When a hybrid drive may make sense
An SSHD is designed to combine hard-drive capacity with the possibility of faster access to frequently used data. Its benefit is workload-dependent: it is most relevant when access patterns repeat and the data can be served from cache. If the main requirement is consistently fast storage, an SSD is the more direct fit. TechTarget’s June 10, 2024 definition characterized SSHDs as a less attractive alternative as flash prices declined, particularly for buyers prioritizing speed; that is a dated market assessment, not a statement of current prices or availability in every region.
For a laptop replacement, compare more than the drive category. Seagate’s May 21, 2024 storage guide frames the decision around form factor, capacity, speed, price, battery life, reliability and durability. The specific computer also determines compatibility: check the interface and physical dimensions against the manufacturer’s model specifications, and confirm the drive fits and works with the host device.

- Check the exact model’s capacity, interface and physical dimensions rather than assuming all SSHDs share specifications.
- Confirm compatibility and availability for your computer and region before buying a replacement.
