What Is a Head-Mounted Display? How HMDs Put Images Before Your Eyes

A head-mounted display is a wearable screen system that presents imagery in front of the eyes. Learn how VR and AR designs differ and what their components do.

A head-mounted display (HMD) is a wearable visual display that places images or other graphical information in front of your eyes. Because it is mounted on your head, it moves with you and keeps the imagery aligned with your view. HMDs include opaque virtual-reality headsets as well as see-through augmented-reality designs; they are not all built or used the same way. IEEE Technology Navigator describes the category as wearable visual output devices presenting imagery directly in front of the user’s eyes.

What does “head-mounted display” mean?

“Head-mounted display” describes where a display is worn and how it presents information: a device is secured to the head and shows imagery in front of the wearer’s eyes. The term covers a broad class of equipment, not one specific headset design. Some HMDs replace the view of the surroundings with computer-generated imagery; others let the wearer see the real environment while adding digital content.

HMDs are used for virtual reality, augmented reality, training simulation, medical visualization, industrial work, entertainment, and scientific data visualization. The shared feature is the head-worn display, not a single purpose or internal architecture.

How do VR and AR HMDs show the world?

Opaque and video-see-through displays

An opaque VR-style headset blocks a direct view of the surroundings. In a video-see-through design, outward-facing cameras capture the environment, and the device combines that camera image with digital content before showing the result on its displays. The wearer sees a camera-mediated view rather than looking directly through transparent optics.

Optical see-through displays

An optical-see-through design uses transparent optics, often called a combiner, so the wearer can look directly at the real world. The device superimposes virtual imagery over that view. This is a different viewing arrangement from video see-through, even though both can place digital elements in the wearer’s field of view. IEEE’s overview discusses these approaches and their components at IEEE Technology Navigator.

What is inside an HMD?

Display and optics

The optical system makes a small display appear large enough to view comfortably and can address the short focal distance of the display source. Display technologies can include LCD panels, OLED microdisplays, or liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS). Optical designs can use refractive lenses, freeform prisms, or diffractive optical waveguides. These are examples of approaches, not parts found in every HMD.

Head tracking

To keep virtual content stable as the wearer turns or moves, an HMD needs to track head movement. Inertial measurement units commonly combine gyroscopes and accelerometers; some systems also use camera-based optical tracking. Tracking quality and delay affect how well displayed imagery follows the wearer’s motion.

How should you compare HMD designs?

The right design depends on the task. Compare how the device presents the real world, its display and optics, its tracking, and how it fits. No single specification is universally best: a trade-off that suits one use may be a drawback in another.

What to compare Why it matters
Viewing configuration Opaque, video-see-through, and optical-see-through designs give the wearer different relationships to the real surroundings.
Display and optical approach Panel or microdisplay technology and the optics affect how imagery is presented; designs vary rather than sharing one standard configuration.
Tracking and latency Head tracking helps keep content aligned with movement. Delay between movement and displayed response can matter, especially in VR.
Field of view and resolution These are among the design trade-offs identified by IEEE; consider them in relation to what the application needs to show.
Fit and comfort Weight distribution, interpupillary-distance adjustment, and heat can affect comfort during extended wear.

What standards cover HMDs?

Eyewear-display optical measurements

The U.S. FDA’s recognized-standards listing includes IEC 63145-20-10, Edition 1.0 (2019-08), which specifies measurement methods for optical properties of eyewear displays. Its scope includes non-see-through VR goggles and see-through AR glasses using virtual-image optics; contact-lens displays and direct-retina projection are outside its scope. The listing entry is dated 2024-05-29, and the FDA page was last updated 2026-05-25. See the FDA recognized consensus standards listing.

VR sickness reduction technology

IEEE 3079-2020 addresses technology intended to reduce or control VR sickness associated with HMD-based VR content, including content design, assessment, and motion-to-photon latency requirements. The IEEE Xplore record gives its publication date as 2021-04-29. A standard’s scope is not a guarantee that a particular device or experience will prevent discomfort. See the IEEE 3079-2020 record.

NASA display requirements

NASA-STD-3001 Volume 2 Appendix F provides technical requirements for display design, selection, and application in spaceflight programs. NASA states that the display technical requirement does not currently apply to AR displays. The NASA page lists Volume 2 as dated 2026-07-15; this is a spaceflight standards context, not a general definition for consumer HMDs. See NASA’s Appendix F: Display Standard.
