What Is a Hardware Security Key?

A hardware security key is a physical sign-in authenticator. Learn how FIDO2 keys work, why they can resist phishing, and how they differ from passkeys.

A hardware security key is a separate physical device you use to prove your identity when signing in to a compatible account. It may connect by USB or communicate wirelessly, such as through NFC. Many web security keys use FIDO standards, which rely on public-key cryptography and can resist phishing. The key is the physical authenticator; a passkey is a credential that may be stored on a key, phone, or computer.

What a hardware security key is

A hardware security key is an authenticator: a physical object that helps verify a sign-in. Depending on the key and device, you might plug it in or tap it to the device. It works only with accounts and devices that support the key’s authentication method. CISA describes a physical security key, such as a YubiKey, as one way to log in.

“Hardware security key” describes the physical authenticator, not one single technology or connector. In consumer web sign-ins, a common type uses FIDO authentication standards.

How FIDO security keys work

FIDO2 combines the W3C WebAuthn specification with the FIDO Alliance’s Client to Authenticator Protocol (CTAP). Together, they let a service and an authenticator use public-key cryptography for sign-in instead of treating a reusable password or manually entered code as the proof of identity. FIDO Alliance’s overview of FIDO2 explains the standards and their role in authentication.

During a WebAuthn sign-in, the authenticator selects the relevant secret based on the verifier’s authenticated domain name. NIST calls this verifier-name binding. Because the response is tied to the real service’s domain, a lookalike phishing site cannot simply collect a valid response for that service and relay it as if it were a code. NIST defines phishing resistance as preventing disclosure of authentication secrets and valid authenticator outputs to an impostor verifier without relying on the user to spot the deception. NIST SP 800-63B describes this protection.

This is protection against verifier impersonation during authentication—not a guarantee against every way an account could be compromised.

Hardware security key vs. passkey

A passkey is a FIDO credential, not necessarily a separate physical device. It can be stored on a phone, computer, or hardware security key. Some passkeys are tied to one physical key; others are held on a platform device or synced by a provider. So a hardware key can store or act as the authenticator for a passkey, but the terms are not interchangeable. See the FIDO Alliance’s FIDO2 overview for the distinction between FIDO credentials and authenticator forms.

What to check before choosing or using one

  • Account support: Check the service’s security or sign-in settings to confirm it accepts a physical security key or the specific FIDO method you intend to use.
  • Device connection: Confirm that the key’s connector or wireless capability is supported by the device you will use. A USB key and an NFC-capable key do not connect in the same way.
  • Authentication method: Do not assume every multifactor option offers the same phishing resistance. CISA lists physical keys alongside app prompts, one-time codes, biometrics, and text or email codes; NIST says manually entered one-time passcodes are not phishing-resistant because they are not bound to the sign-in session.

Compatibility depends on the account’s supported methods and the device’s capabilities; there is no universal guarantee that a particular key works with every service or device. Check the account provider and device maker before relying on a specific setup. CISA’s multifactor authentication guidance describes physical keys and other common sign-in methods.
