What Is a Gigabit Switch Router? Switches vs. Routers Explained

A gigabit switch connects wired devices on a LAN at 1 Gbps or faster. Learn how it differs from a router and when it can add Ethernet ports.

A gigabit switch connects wired devices on a local network (LAN) through Ethernet ports rated at 1 Gbps or faster. A router connects that LAN to other networks, such as the internet. They do different jobs: adding a switch to a router can provide more wired connections, but the switch does not replace the router.

What does “gigabit switch” mean?

“Gigabit” describes the rated speed of the switch’s Ethernet ports: 1 Gbps or faster. The switch connects wired devices on the same LAN and forwards Ethernet traffic using MAC-address information. Cisco describes the broad Gigabit Ethernet standards range as 1G to 800G per port; that standards range is not a description of the speeds typically found on a home switch. Cisco’s gigabit switch overview explains the term and standards range.

How is a switch different from a router?

A switch forwards traffic between devices within a local network. A router connects networks and routes IP packets between them—for example, between a home LAN and the internet. Cisco summarizes the distinction this way: “A switch connects users within a LAN using MAC addresses, while a router is used to connect LANs to other area networks or to the internet.” Cisco’s switch-versus-router explanation covers their complementary roles.

A switch alone does not provide internet access. For devices to reach the internet, the network still needs a router and an upstream internet connection. Some consumer devices combine router and switching functions in one enclosure, so a product may have both router functions and several Ethernet ports. The presence of switch ports does not make the two roles interchangeable. NETGEAR’s router overview discusses the router’s role in a home network.

Can a switch add Ethernet ports to a router?

Yes. Connect a switch to an available Ethernet port on the router, then connect wired devices to the switch. The switch expands the number of wired connections available on the LAN; it does not add Wi-Fi coverage or change the router’s job. NETGEAR describes using a switch to connect additional devices to a network in its switch introduction.

What should you check when choosing a gigabit switch?

  • Port count: Count the devices you want to connect and allow for the connection back to the router, plus spare ports for future devices.
  • Managed or unmanaged: An unmanaged switch is a straightforward plug-and-play choice for basic connectivity. Consider a managed model if you need network configuration, segmentation, monitoring, or other controls.
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE): If the switch must power compatible devices such as access points or cameras over Ethernet, verify that the model supports PoE and meets the devices’ requirements.
  • Expandability: For a larger or growing deployment, compare fixed-configuration switches with modular or stackable designs.

These are feature choices, not features guaranteed by the word “gigabit.” Check the specifications for the particular model.

Does a gigabit switch guarantee gigabit internet or transfer speeds?

No. The 1 Gbps rating describes the Ethernet link capability; it is not a promise that an internet plan or a file transfer will reach that speed. Actual throughput depends on the full path, including the connected devices, cabling, other network equipment, and internet service. A switch provides wired LAN connectivity, but it cannot overcome limitations elsewhere in the connection.
