A full-size SD card is the standard physical form of an SD memory card—not a description of its storage capacity. The SD Association lists its dimensions as 32 × 24 × 2.1 mm (length × width × thickness). It is larger than a microSD card and fits devices designed for a standard SD slot.

What does “full-size SD card” mean?

“Full-size” refers to the card’s physical shape. It distinguishes the standard SD card from the smaller microSD form factor. The SD Association also recognizes miniSD, but says microSD has replaced it in common use. SD Association: SD standard overview

A microSD card does not become a full-size SD card when it is placed in a passive SD adapter. The memory card remains microSD; the adapter simply lets it fit a standard SD slot.

What size is a full-size SD card?

The SD Association specifies the standard SD card as 32 × 24 × 2.1 mm: 32 mm long, 24 mm wide, and 2.1 mm thick. SD Association: SD, SDHC, SDXC and SDUC capacity overview

How is physical size different from capacity?

The physical form and the capacity family are separate classifications. A standard-size card can belong to different capacity families; “full-size” does not mean high-capacity. The SD Association gives these ranges:

Capacity family Stated capacity range
SD Up to 2 GB
SDHC More than 2 GB through 32 GB
SDXC More than 32 GB through 2 TB
SDUC More than 2 TB through 128 TB

These are the Association’s standard ranges, not a guarantee that every capacity within a range is available for purchase or supported by a particular device. SD Association capacity overview

What else differs between SD and microSD cards?

Besides physical dimensions, the SD Association notes differences in pin count and in whether a write-protect switch is present. Standard SD cards have a write-protect switch. High Speed and UHS-I full-size cards use nine pins, while newer interfaces can use additional contact layouts. Check the card and device specifications when interface or speed support matters. How do you check whether a full-size SD card will work?

Match the card to the exact device, rather than relying on its physical fit alone. Before buying, check the device manual or manufacturer specifications for:

  • Capacity family: which of SD, SDHC, SDXC, or SDUC it supports, and its capacity limit.
  • Speed and interface: any documented bus or speed requirements for the device.

SD standards cover many kinds of devices, but that does not mean every card works in every host. A computer without a compatible built-in slot may need a USB SD card reader; that accessory is not needed when the device already has the appropriate slot. SD Association: SD standard overview

How long does a full-size SD card last?

The SD Association says service life depends on how a card is manufactured and that current technology with normal usage typically gives a lifespan of 10 years or more. This is a qualified general statement, not a warranty or a guarantee that a card is safe for long-term archiving. SD Association FAQ
