A freehand selection tool lets you draw a boundary around part of an image with a pointer, so you can edit that region separately. Depending on the program, you may find it called Free Selection in GIMP, Freehand Selection in Krita, or a Lasso tool in Photoshop.
How a freehand selection tool works
You trace the area you want to select, then close and confirm the outline. The editor treats the enclosed area as a selection, which lets you apply edits or image-processing commands to that region rather than the entire image.

In GIMP 3.0, Free Select supports both a continuous hand-drawn boundary and straight polygonal segments: you can keep the mouse button pressed while dragging to draw freely, or release it and drag to create a straight segment. The manual says the two segment styles can be mixed in one outline. Press F to activate Free Select in GIMP 3.0. See the GIMP 3.0 Free Select documentation for its closing and validation behavior.

How to choose between selection tools

Photoshop groups hand-drawn options under Lasso; its Magnetic Lasso is intended to follow detected edges, while Object Selection can provide an automatic starting selection for some subjects. Freehand tracing is flexible, but it is not automatically the most precise choice. GIMP’s manual says Free Select can be useful for “roughing in” a selection and is less suitable for precise definition; for detailed refinement, it recommends Quick Mask.
Refine the selection and its edges
Selection tools commonly let you change how a new outline interacts with an existing selection. Depending on the editor, you can add to the selection, subtract from it, replace it, or keep only the overlapping area (intersect). The available actions and modifier keys differ by program, so check the relevant tool options rather than assuming one editor’s shortcuts work in another.

Edge controls also vary. GIMP and Photoshop document antialiasing, which smooths the appearance of jagged selection edges, and feathering, which softens the transition at the boundary. These controls affect how the selection edge is treated; they do not change how you draw the outline.

Does freehand selection require a graphics tablet?
No. The tool is pointer-driven, so you can use it with a mouse or another pointing device. GIMP’s manual notes that Free Select is much easier to use with a tablet than with a mouse; a tablet may improve comfort or control for some users, but it is not a requirement.

In ImageJ, the Freehand Selection Tool creates non-rectangular regions of interest. Those regions can be used with editing, processing, and analysis commands, including measurements. The same basic idea—outlining an area—can therefore support image analysis as well as visual editing. See the ImageJ documentation on selection tools.
