A firewall appliance code injection vulnerability occurs when attacker-controlled input reaches a part of the device’s software that interprets commands or code, without being handled safely. The input can then alter what the software executes. The exact entry point, access an attacker needs, and potential impact vary by product and vulnerability; there is no single exploit pattern shared by all firewalls.
What “code injection” means on a firewall
Firewall appliances run software to manage network traffic and provide administrative features. That software may process information supplied through a web interface, a network service, a command-line interface, or another feature. If software passes untrusted input into an execution context without correctly validating or neutralizing it, the system may interpret part of that input as instructions rather than ordinary data.

MITRE defines command injection as improper neutralization of special elements used in a command (CWE-77). OS command injection is the specific case in which the affected command is an operating-system command (CWE-78). “Code injection” is broader: not every software code injection issue involves a shell or operating-system command.

- A feature accepts or processes input. The input might come from a user, a network request, or another source an attacker can influence.
- The software uses that input in an execution context. For example, it might construct a command to carry out an administrative task.
- Special characters or content are handled incorrectly. Instead of remaining data, some input is interpreted as command or code syntax.
- The software performs an unintended operation. Depending on the flaw and the device’s permissions, that could allow commands or code to run.
This describes the general failure, not a universal exploit chain. The relevant interface, prerequisites, and result must be established from the advisory for the exact product and vulnerability.

Examples show why the details matter
These cases illustrate different attack surfaces and prerequisites. They should not be treated as interchangeable examples of one standard bug.
| Case | Entry point and attacker access | Scope and potential impact | Vendor guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zyxel CVE-2022-30525 | CERT-EU described unauthenticated remote command injection through the administrative HTTP interface. Its advisory attributed the issue to unsanitized attacker input passed to os.system. |
The advisory covered specified Zyxel model families and identified ZLD V5.30 as the fixed version. CERT-EU reported CVSS 9.8 for this vulnerability. | See the CERT-EU advisory for the affected models and historical fix details. Its version information is not general update advice for current devices. |
| Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS CVE-2024-3400 | The vendor described a command injection associated with arbitrary file creation in the GlobalProtect feature. The specified affected configurations could allow an unauthenticated attacker to reach the flaw. | For the specific PAN-OS versions and configurations in its advisory, Palo Alto Networks reported arbitrary code execution with root privileges. It rated the case severity 10 / CVSS-B 10.0. | Consult the Palo Alto Networks advisory for affected configurations, fixed releases, and current response directions. |
| Cisco ASA and FTD advisory, August 2025 | Cisco described an authenticated local attacker with administrative credentials submitting crafted input to specific commands in affected software. | The vulnerabilities could allow commands to run as root. Cisco reported CVSS 6.0 for the cited advisory; that score applies to this case, not to appliance injection vulnerabilities generally. | Cisco says software updates address the vulnerabilities and provides a Software Checker to identify affected releases and fixes. See the Cisco advisory. |
The contrast is important: one case involved unauthenticated access through an administrative HTTP interface; another depended on a particular feature configuration; and the Cisco case described authenticated local access. A severity score describes a specific vulnerability under its scoring context—it does not indicate how common this class of flaw is.
What an attacker might be able to do
The outcome depends on what the vulnerable code can reach and what privileges it has. A flaw might let an attacker run commands or code, but that does not mean every command-injection vulnerability grants root access or produces the same consequences.
- Confidentiality: access to information the device can read may be at risk.
- Integrity: an attacker may be able to alter device data or settings.
- Availability: unintended operations may disrupt firewall services or device operation.
These are possible categories of impact, not a claim that every affected appliance is exposed to all three. The product advisory is the source for the documented impact and conditions.

How to check whether your firewall is affected
- Identify the exact device and release. Record the vendor, model, software version, and relevant feature configuration.
- Find the official advisory for the vulnerability or product. Match the affected models, releases, and configuration conditions—not just the product family or a similar vulnerability name.
- Use the vendor’s checker where available. Cisco’s cited advisory links a Software Checker for identifying affected releases and fixes.
- Follow the advisory’s current remediation instructions. Install the applicable fixed release and apply only the vendor’s current mitigation guidance.
- If compromise is possible, follow the vendor’s investigation and recovery process. Preserve evidence and avoid actions that could undermine investigation steps specified by the vendor.
Advisories and mitigation guidance can change. For CVE-2024-3400, Palo Alto Networks says disabling device telemetry is no longer an effective mitigation, and telemetry does not need to be enabled for exposure. In that specific context, the vendor also advises obtaining a Tech Support File for forensic analysis before rebooting into a fixed version. Check the live advisory before acting; do not apply that case-specific procedure to unrelated products.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What reduces the risk
- Keep firewall software current using the applicable vendor release and upgrade guidance.
- Limit access to administrative interfaces according to the vendor’s security recommendations.
- Review alerts and advisories for the exact products and features in use.
- Use vendor-specified investigation and recovery steps if there are signs of compromise.
These practices support risk reduction, but they do not establish whether a particular appliance is vulnerable. That requires checking its precise version and configuration against the relevant official advisory.
