What Is a Fire TV Stick? Definition, Models and Setup

A Fire TV Stick is Amazon's compact streaming media player that plugs into a TV's HDMI port. Here is how it works, how the models differ, and what setup requires.

A Fire TV Stick is Amazon’s compact streaming media player. It plugs into an HDMI port on your television, connects to the internet, and runs Fire TV and streaming apps on that TV. The television stays the display. The Stick supplies the software, the on-screen interface, and the link to online services.

How a Fire TV Stick works

The device is simple in concept, and it helps to think of setup as a chain of four connections:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • HDMI: the Stick plugs into an HDMI port on the TV and sends picture and sound to it.
  • Power: the Stick needs power to run. How that power arrives depends on the model (see the setup section below).
  • Wi-Fi: the Stick joins your home network so it can reach streaming services and receive software updates.
  • Amazon account: you sign in to an Amazon account, which the Stick uses to manage apps, purchases and the Fire TV home screen.

What you can do with it

Amazon describes the Fire TV experience as access to movies and shows from major content providers, plus Alexa access through the included voice remote on current models. Those are Amazon’s own descriptions of the platform. They do not mean every service, title, feature or subscription is available in every region or on every model. Check the specific apps you care about before you buy.

Fire TV is an ecosystem, not one stick

“Fire TV” is a product family name. The word does not describe a single device, which is why buyers often mix up several products. Amazon’s materials distinguish three things:

  • Fire TV Stick: the plug-in HDMI streaming player described in this article.
  • Fire TV televisions: TVs with the Fire TV software built in, so no separate stick is needed.
  • Fire TV Cube: a separate, larger device in the Fire TV line, not a stick.

Why the operating system generation matters

Amazon states that the Fire TV Stick 4K Select starts the transition to Vega OS and that future Fire TV Sticks will run on Vega. On Amazon’s Fire TV developer portal the company puts it this way: “Starting with Fire TV Stick 4K Select, all future Fire TV Sticks will run on Vega.” That sentence comes from Amazon as a company, not from an individual spokesperson. Because of this shift, do not assume that an older Stick and a newer one behave identically in software, menus or app support.

How to choose a model

No single model is the best choice for everyone. Match the decision to your situation along these lines:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • TV resolution: a 4K television is a reason to look at 4K-capable models, while HD models are designed for HD viewing. Confirm supported formats in Amazon’s specifications for the exact model.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi standards and Ethernet adapter support differ between models and generations, so a specification from one model should not be assumed for another.
  • Generation and software: decide whether you want a legacy device or one on the newer Vega OS path.
  • Remote and features: voice remotes and Alexa access are documented by Amazon, but remote features vary by model.
  • Local availability: Amazon lists different models in different marketplaces, so check the model available in your country before comparing.

Amazon’s model-specific setup guide lists these basic requirements:
