The term has two common meanings. It can refer to the transfer capability and the protocol behind it, such as FTP, FTPS or SFTP. It can also refer to a managed service that provides a server endpoint, access controls and a connection to storage. Which meaning applies changes what you need to check before relying on one.
The two meanings of the term
In the protocol sense, a file transfer service is the mechanism that lets one machine send or retrieve files from another. NIST describes FTP as a standard for transferring files over the internet and for uploading or downloading files between local media and a remote server.

In the service sense, a provider runs the server side for you. It exposes an endpoint that clients can connect to, applies access rules to users, and writes or reads files in a storage system such as object storage or a file system. A business might use this to automate recurring exchanges with partners, while an individual might simply connect a desktop client to a server.

RFC 959, the Internet Standard specification by J. Postel and J. Reynolds, states: “The objectives of FTP are 1) to promote sharing of files (computer programs and/or data), 2) to encourage indirect or implicit (via programs) use of remote computers, 3) to shield a user from variations in file storage systems among hosts, and 4) to transfer data reliably and efficiently.” The RFC also notes that FTP was designed mainly for use by programs, though a person can use it directly.

The protocols behind the name
The word “file transfer” covers several protocols that are related but not interchangeable. Treating them as synonyms is one of the most common mistakes in this area.
| Name | What it is | Protection described in provider documentation | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| FTP (File Transfer Protocol) | The basic protocol for moving files between a client and a server | Unencrypted, per AWS’s description of its FTP option | Legacy or internal transfers where encryption is handled elsewhere |
| FTPS | FTP extended with SSL/TLS, described by Microsoft as the FTP over SSL/TLS extension | TLS encryption, per AWS’s managed FTPS option | Existing FTP workflows that need encryption added |
| SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) | File transfer carried over SSH | SSH encrypted channel, as described by AWS and Google Cloud | Partner exchanges and server-to-server automation |
| AS2 | A protocol for structured business-to-business data exchange | Not stated in AWS’s Transfer Family description | Formal electronic data interchange between businesses |
| Browser-based transfer | Upload and download through a web interface offered by some managed services | Not stated in the provider description reviewed | Users who need a simple interface rather than a client program |
FTP and FTPS are not the same thing. FTPS adds TLS to FTP, while SFTP is a different protocol that runs inside SSH. A service that advertises “SFTP” is not offering FTP with encryption, and a server that says “FTPS” is not speaking SFTP. Clients and servers must agree on the protocol before any transfer can begin, so the label matters in practice.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

Be careful with the name “Cloud FTP.” Google Cloud describes its managed Cloud FTP service as an SFTP server, so despite the name, the protocol it uses is SFTP.
What a managed service adds
A bare protocol gives you a way to move files. A managed service adds the infrastructure around that movement. Two cloud examples show the range of what providers offer.

Google Cloud Cloud FTP
Google Cloud describes Cloud FTP as a managed SFTP server for transferring files to and from Cloud Storage. Its documented implementation transfers data over an encrypted SSH channel, authenticates SFTP users with public keys, and maps each user to a service account with bucket permissions. Google lists external partner exchange, coworker access, and uploads for data processing, analytics and machine learning as use cases. Transfer-related storage operations can be recorded in Cloud Audit Logs, and Google recommends that clients retry failed transfers. Standard clients named by Google include Cyberduck, FileZilla and WinSCP.
AWS Transfer Family
AWS describes Transfer Family as a managed service for moving files into and out of Amazon S3 or Amazon EFS. It supports FTP, FTPS, SFTP, AS2 and browser-based transfers, and AWS documents file-exchange workflows in financial services, healthcare, advertising and retail. The choice of protocol therefore depends on what the other party can speak, not on the service itself.

These descriptions are provider documentation, not guarantees about every file transfer service. Feature sets and implementation details change, so confirm them against the current documentation before you commit to a design.

Common uses
- Exchanging files with an outside partner without giving the partner access to your internal network or storage APIs.
- Letting staff upload or download through a familiar desktop client rather than learning cloud storage tools.
- Feeding data pipelines, where files arrive at a server and land in object storage for processing or analytics.
- Automating recurring exchanges, such as a nightly batch from a supplier, scheduled by a script or the client itself.
Is FTP secure?
Plain FTP is not secure for sensitive data. AWS describes its FTP option as unencrypted, so anything sent over it, including credentials, can be read by anyone able to observe the traffic. Using FTPS or SFTP changes the transport, but it does not settle the question for a given deployment. Before handling sensitive information, check each of the following for the specific service:

- Which protocol is offered, and whether plain FTP is enabled alongside a secure option.
- How users authenticate, for example passwords or public keys.
- Which permissions each user has, and which storage location those permissions map to.
- Whether transfers and storage operations are logged, and where those logs are kept.
- Where the files end up at rest, and who else can reach that storage.
How to compare services
- Protocol and encryption. Identify whether the service offers FTP, FTPS, SFTP, AS2 or browser transfer, and which protections are actually used for your traffic.
- Authentication and access control. Confirm how users sign in and what each user can reach. Google Cloud’s model, public keys mapped to service accounts with bucket permissions, is one example of a per-user mapping.
- Storage destination and workflow. Determine whether files land in object storage, a file system or another endpoint. AWS documents S3 and EFS as destinations for Transfer Family.
- Operational visibility and resilience. Check logging, retry behavior, network reachability and any service-specific limits. Confirm how failed transfers are retried on the client side.
- Compatibility. Confirm that the sender and recipient can use the protocol and client the service supports. Google documents compatibility with common SFTP clients; AWS lists several protocols and a browser option.
Start with the parties involved. A partner that already runs an SFTP client narrows the choice quickly, while an internal team that only needs browser access points toward a different set of options.
