What is a DVR? A digital video recorder (DVR) is a device or system that records video in digital form and saves it for later playback. In television service, it often records programs to a set-top-box hard drive; in security systems, it records footage from surveillance cameras.
How a television DVR works
A television DVR records a program so you can watch it later, rather than only when it airs. In the FCC’s description of subscriber DVR service, recordings are stored on a hard drive inside a set-top box. The service may also let viewers pause live television, rewind or fast-forward, and use an electronic program guide to manage recordings.

Some systems have dual tuners, which can allow you to record one program while watching another. These are common DVR functions, not guarantees for every device or subscription. The available controls and recording limits depend on the provider, plan and equipment.
DVR and PVR: what is the difference?
DVR stands for digital video recorder. Personal video recorder (PVR) is another term used for consumer devices that record video and audio to a hard drive and offer VCR-like playback controls. The terms can describe similar devices; the name alone does not establish a particular feature set.

What does DVR mean in a security system?
In surveillance, a DVR records footage from security cameras. An embedded security DVR typically accepts camera inputs, converts and compresses the video, stores it locally, and provides playback. Some systems also support network streaming. A hybrid DVR may accept both analog CCTV and IP camera inputs; the supported combination depends on the particular system.

What varies between DVRs?
There is no universal DVR storage size or feature list. For a television DVR, check whether recordings are stored on a local set-top-box drive or through a provider service, how tuners work, which rooms or televisions are supported, and what limits apply to the specific model or plan. Storage capacity can vary by equipment model.
