A digital offset color press creates print images from digital data while using an offset-style transfer stage. The name does not describe just one machine design: HP uses it for Indigo liquid electrophotography (LEP), while Presstek uses “digital offset” for direct-imaging presses that image offset plates on press.
What “digital offset” means
In conventional offset printing, an inked image transfers from a plate to a rubber blanket, then from the blanket to the material being printed. A digital offset press adds digital image creation to an offset-style transfer workflow. The word “digital” describes how the image is supplied or formed; “offset” refers to an intermediate transfer stage.

HP’s 2002 technical paper describes the Indigo approach as creating the printed image directly from digital data and using an offset cylinder and blanket. That description is specific to Indigo, not a universal definition of every press called digital offset. Read the paper by Udi Chatow of HP’s Indigo Division.

Two different uses of the term
HP Indigo: digital LEP imaging and blanket transfer
In HP Indigo liquid electrophotographic (LEP) printing, digital image separations are formed on a reusable Photo Imaging Plate (PIP). Each color separation transfers from the plate to a heated blanket. Heat melts and blends pigment-bearing particles in ElectroInk into a film; the film then contacts the cooler substrate and solidifies on it. This plate-to-blanket-to-substrate sequence is why the process has an offset-style transfer stage. HP explains its digital offset printing process.

Presstek DI: digital imaging of offset plates on press
Presstek uses “digital offset” for direct-imaging (DI) printing. In this workflow, ripped files go to the press, where the plates are imaged on press; the term describes digital plate imaging within an offset printing system, rather than the Indigo LEP transfer mechanism. Presstek describes its DI approach as combining laser imaging, thermal digital media and press design, and identifies it as a waterless printing process. See Presstek’s product overview.
How the implementations differ
| Comparison point | HP Indigo LEP | Presstek DI |
|---|---|---|
| Image formation | Digital image separations are formed on a reusable PIP. | Digital files are used to image offset plates on the press. |
| Transfer or printing mechanism | Ink-bearing film transfers from the PIP to a heated blanket, then to the substrate. | On-press-imaged offset plates are used in a waterless printing approach. |
| Materials described by the manufacturer | HP lists paper, film, shrink film, label stock and pre-laminates for its Indigo portfolio; compatibility varies by press and material. | Presstek describes paper and packaging stocks; configurations and specifications vary by model. |
| Variation between copies | Digital image creation supports changing content; no universal economic break-even run length is established by the cited sources. | The cited overview describes on-press imaging but does not establish an economic break-even run length. |
What to check when choosing a press or print method
“Digital offset” alone is not enough to predict cost, quality, speed or stock compatibility. Compare the specific press and job using the following factors:
Rank #2
- Designed for ITB transfer belt systems requiring lubrication in high-volume production environments
- Compatible with Pro 8100ex, 8100s, 8110s, and 8120s digital color presses
- Replaces parts corresponding to OEM reference numbers D074-6450 and G178-6767
- Formulated as a solid lubricant bar for consistent, controlled application during maintenance cycles
- Helps maintain transfer belt performance by reducing friction and toner offset buildup
- Imaging method: determine whether the image is formed through Indigo LEP or by digitally imaging offset plates on press.
- Prepress and make-ready: both workflows use digital input, but the cited sources do not provide a neutral, quantified comparison of setup time or cost.
- Job variation: digital image control can accommodate copy that changes from one impression to another. The cited sources do not establish a universal run length at which this is cheaper than another method.
- Substrate specifications: verify the exact material, thickness and surface against the documentation for the particular press. Broad portfolio descriptions do not guarantee that every stock works on every model.
What is known about the name’s history
HP says it unveiled the world’s first digital offset color printing press in 1993. This is HP’s historical claim, not an independently established industry-wide consensus. The technical paper by Udi Chatow dates to January 2002 and is useful for understanding the Indigo process, not for current press specifications.
