A digital flat-screen TV is a non-CRT television with a flat-panel display that receives or presents digitally encoded video. “Digital” describes how the signal is represented and decoded; “flat-screen” describes the display’s physical form. The terms do not, by themselves, guarantee HD resolution, smart-TV features, or support for a particular broadcast standard.
What “digital flat-screen TV” means
The phrase combines two separate characteristics:
- Digital refers to audiovisual material carried in digital form and the equipment that receives, decodes, and presents it. ITU-T J.1, in its January 2024 glossary, describes a digital television device as one that receives, decodes, and presents audio and video transmitted in compressed form. The device can be one unit or several components. ITU-T J.1 (01/2024)
- Flat-screen refers to the physical display: a flat-panel television rather than a cathode-ray tube (CRT) set. The FDA’s non-CRT television and video-display classification includes LCD, LED, OLED, and plasma technologies. FDA product classification
These traits are independent. A signal can be digital without being displayed on a flat panel, and a flat panel’s shape does not reveal its resolution or which broadcast system its tuner supports. ATSC describes digital television systems in terms of such elements as encoding, transport, and radio-frequency transmission. ATSC A/53

Which display technologies count?
Flat-panel TVs can use different methods to create an image. The technology name alone does not tell you whether the television can receive a particular digital broadcast; that depends on its supported tuner and standard.
| Display type | How it produces the image |
|---|---|
| LCD | Uses a liquid-crystal display panel; many televisions illuminate that panel with LEDs. |
| LED-backlit LCD | An LCD television whose LED lighting illuminates the panel. In consumer TV terminology, “LED TV” usually means this, not a direct-view LED panel. |
| OLED | Uses pixels that emit their own light rather than relying on an LED backlight to illuminate an LCD. |
| Plasma | A flat-panel display technology included in the FDA’s non-CRT television/display classification. |

Digital does not necessarily mean HD
A digital television can display standard-definition content; “digital” is not another word for high definition. ATSC’s glossary treats standard-definition digital television and HDTV as distinct descriptions. HDTV refers to picture characteristics such as increased resolution relative to conventional television and a 16:9 aspect ratio. ATSC SDTV glossary ATSC HDTV glossary
Likewise, the phrase does not establish whether a TV is a smart TV. Smart features concern connectivity and software, not the basic meaning of digital signal handling or flat-panel construction.

Why the broadcast standard still matters
“Digital TV” is too broad to confirm compatibility with a specific over-the-air broadcast system. Check the television’s stated tuner and supported standard for the region where it will be used. As a U.S. terrestrial-broadcast example, ATSC 3.0 is a newer digital television system with options for higher-capacity services, including UHD. ATSC says it is largely incompatible with predecessor ATSC systems, so a generic digital-TV label does not promise support across generations. The current ATSC A/300:2026-04 version was approved on 14 April 2026. ATSC A/300: ATSC 3.0 System

What to check when a listing says “digital flat-screen TV”
- Display technology: Look for LCD, LED-backlit LCD, OLED, or another specific panel description rather than assuming the phrase identifies one.
- Resolution: Confirm the stated resolution if picture detail matters; “digital” alone does not mean HD or UHD.
- Broadcast reception: Verify tuner and broadcast-standard support for your country and signal source.
- Smart features: Check separately for internet connectivity and apps; they are not implied by “digital flat-screen.”
