A digital audio cable carries audio as digital data between compatible devices, but it is not one universal cable. The right choice depends on the ports and formats both devices support: common options include coaxial or optical S/PDIF, professional AES3/AES-EBU, and HDMI when audio travels with video.
What “digital audio cable” means
The phrase describes a cable used to carry a digital audio signal. It can refer to different interfaces and physical connections, so the name alone does not tell you which cable to buy. Check the output on the source device and the input on the receiving device, then match their connection type and supported audio formats.

The Audio Engineering Society describes AES3 as providing “the serial digital transmission of two channels of periodically sampled and uniformly quantized audio signals on various media.” That definition illustrates the distinction: a digital-audio standard describes how audio data is transmitted, while the cable and connector are the physical means used for a particular implementation. Common types of digital audio connections
| Connection | How it carries audio | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Coaxial S/PDIF | Electrical signal over coaxial cable, commonly using RCA connectors. | Both devices need matching coaxial S/PDIF ports. Focusrite recommends a purpose-made 75-ohm S/PDIF cable. Focusrite cable guidance |
| Optical S/PDIF / TOSLINK | Audio data travels as light through an optical TOSLINK connection. | Both devices need compatible optical ports and must support the same audio format. TOSLINK describes a physical connection, not a guarantee that every device supports the same digital-audio format. Focusrite digital considerations |
| AES3 / AES-EBU | A professional digital-audio interface used in audio equipment; XLR is common, though implementations can use other media and connectors. | Follow the equipment documentation for cable and impedance requirements. In the application covered by Genelec, AES-EBU uses 110-ohm twisted-pair cable. Genelec cable guidance |
| HDMI | A digital connection that can carry audio and video together. | Match the cable category and certification to the features required by the devices. The cable does not add capabilities that the connected devices lack. HDMI cable overview |
AES3 specifies a transmission format and physical-layer details; it should not be treated as interchangeable with every cable that happens to have an XLR connector. Likewise, RCA coaxial S/PDIF, optical TOSLINK, AES3 XLR, and HDMI are physically different connections. AES3 standard Apple Logic Pro documentation
#1 Best Overall
- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
- 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
How to identify the cable you need
- Inspect the source output and receiving-device input. Look for labels such as S/PDIF, Digital Audio, Optical Audio, TOSLINK, or Digital Coaxial. Device manuals can clarify ambiguous ports. Philips connection guidance
- Match the connection at both ends. An optical output and coaxial input do not connect with a simple cable. Use a converter designed for the source and destination formats; a connector adapter alone does not convert the signal.
- Confirm format compatibility. Check the manuals for supported sample rates, channel configurations, and encoded formats. Focusrite notes that devices connected over AES3 must operate at the same sample rate. Focusrite digital considerations
- Follow interface-specific cable guidance. For coaxial S/PDIF, Focusrite recommends purpose-made 75-ohm cable. For AES-EBU, use the specification required by the equipment; Genelec specifies 110-ohm twisted-pair for its stated application. Focusrite Genelec
- For HDMI, verify the feature requirements. Check the devices’ specifications and choose a cable category and certification appropriate to the audio and video features in use. HDMI 2.2 overview
Is optical or coaxial digital audio better?
Neither is universally better. The practical choice is usually determined by which ports the devices share and which formats they support. Optical and coaxial S/PDIF are different physical ways to connect compatible equipment; if the ports do not match, an appropriate converter may be needed. Consult the manufacturers’ documentation for format limits rather than assuming that either connection supports every sample rate, channel count, or encoded format.
For HDMI, the relevant trade-off is different: it can carry audio and video over one connection, but the cable and connected devices must support the features you intend to use.

Does a digital audio cable need to be special?
It needs to be suitable for its interface, not simply marketed as “digital.” A purpose-made 75-ohm cable is Focusrite’s recommendation for coaxial S/PDIF, and the equipment manufacturer’s specified cable should guide professional AES-EBU installations. For HDMI, use a cable category and certification suited to the required features. A higher price by itself is not evidence of improved sound quality; the guidance here supports choosing the correct connection, specification, and compatible format rather than paying more for an unspecified audio benefit.
When both devices already support the same digital connection and audio format, the cable carries the data between them. It cannot make incompatible ports fit or supply a format that either device does not support. If the receiving equipment has only analog inputs, a digital-to-analog converter is needed in the signal path; a cable alone cannot perform that conversion.
