A dice-builder roguelite is a run-based game in which dice shape the actions you can take, while your evolving setup gives those rolls a strategy. Each attempt brings new encounters and choices, so you adapt your build as you go. The label is descriptive, not a formal genre with one agreed ruleset: some games use rolled dice to activate equipment, while others let you build or customize the dice themselves.
How dice work in a dice-builder roguelite
Dice supply uncertain values or action resources. What matters is how the game lets you use them: a roll might be assigned to an ability, checked against an equipment requirement, or shaped by dice you have built. The player’s decisions connect the roll to the action; the dice do not necessarily decide the whole turn by themselves.

In Dicey Dungeons, dice are assigned to equipment, and each piece of equipment has activation requirements. The game uses six-sided values, but characters can change how the system feels. The Robot, for example, calculates and rolls manually toward a target. These are mechanics of that game, not rules shared by every dice-builder.
Developer Terry Cavanagh describes the central loop of his game this way: “You explore a dungeon, you find equipment, and you use dice on that equipment to activate it.” That is a useful example of dice driving actions, rather than a universal definition of the label.

What a build means
A build is the mechanical setup you assemble: the equipment, abilities, dice, or other tools that work together during a run. It is the strategy behind your available options, not necessarily a deck of cards.
In Dicey Dungeons, equipment found in chests or shops combines with character-specific mechanics. By contrast, Circadian Dice describes its approach as building a set of dice rather than upgrading a deck. The word “build” therefore points to the evolving setup, while the parts you assemble depend on the game.

What a run is—and how it changes
A run is one attempt through a sequence of encounters or scenarios. It gives the build a changing context: enemies and rewards test the setup, and new options can alter what it can do.

Circadian Dice offers a different example: its store description highlights scenarios with random mutators and upgrade opportunities. That variety shows why “roguelite” does not imply one universal map structure, reward system, or rule for what happens after a run ends.
How dice, builds, and runs fit together
- The game presents uncertainty. Dice rolls create values or resources that may constrain the actions available.
- Your build gives you ways to use them. Equipment, abilities, or customized dice determine how rolls can become useful actions.
- The run adds new tests and options. Encounters and rewards can push you to adjust your setup as the attempt unfolds.
The resulting decision is how to make the most of the available dice and the tools the run offers. How much control players have over rolls, and how much they can reshape a build, varies from game to game.

How to compare dice-builder games
- What are you building? Look for equipment and loadouts, a customized set of dice, or another collection of abilities.
- How much control do you have over dice? Can you assign rolled results to actions, change values, or customize faces?
- What changes during a run? Check how encounters, rewards, scenarios, or mutators challenge or reshape your setup.
Dicey Dungeons is a useful example of dice activating equipment; Nintendo also describes it as a deckbuilding roguelike. Circadian Dice illustrates a game whose store description emphasizes building a dice set. These games show why the label is best understood as a helpful description of mechanics, not a checklist every title must satisfy.
