A desktop search program is software that helps you find files and other information stored on your computer. It can search file names and locations, and—when the relevant content is indexed and supported—properties and words inside files. Windows Search is Microsoft’s built-in example.
What does a desktop search program do?
It gives you a way to search information held on a computer, rather than requiring you to browse folders one by one. Depending on the program and its configuration, results can include documents, photos, email, contacts, calendar appointments, and multimedia. Microsoft describes Windows Search as a desktop search platform for these kinds of data. Microsoft Learn: Windows Search

How does desktop search work?
Many desktop search systems build an index: a catalog of searchable information about files and other content. Depending on what is supported and enabled, the index may contain names, paths, properties, and words found inside files. A search can query this catalog instead of examining every file from scratch.

What can Windows Search find?
You can search from the taskbar or File Explorer. Results depend on the locations included in the index, the file types selected for indexing, and whether the relevant format handler or app integration is available. Microsoft lists document formats such as TXT, PDF, DOCX, DOC, RTF, PPTX, XLS, and XLSX, plus image formats including JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and ICO. Microsoft Support: Search indexing in Windows

Which locations are included in Windows indexing?
Windows offers indexing modes that differ in scope. Classic includes common locations such as Documents, Pictures, Music, and the desktop by default. Enhanced covers user folders and files more broadly. You can adjust indexed locations and choose whether particular locations or file types are indexed. What is semantic indexing on Copilot+ PCs?
Microsoft documents semantic indexing on Copilot+ PCs as a way to return related concepts in addition to traditional term matches. Its support documentation says this semantic-index data is stored locally on the device or Cloud PC storage, and is not stored by Microsoft or used to train AI models. That statement applies to the documented semantic-index data; it should not be assumed to describe every search feature or app. Microsoft Support: Search indexing in Windows

Is Windows Desktop Search the current name?
No. “Windows Desktop Search 2.x” refers to an older Microsoft product for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft marks it obsolete and recommends Windows Search on later Windows releases. For the current built-in Windows platform, use the name Windows Search. Microsoft Learn: Windows Desktop Search 2.x
