A dedicated web server is a physical server allocated to one customer to run web-server software and handle web requests. The word “web server” can mean either the software that responds to requests or the computer running it; “dedicated” describes who gets the machine’s resources.
What does “web server” mean?
A web server is software that receives requests for web resources and sends responses. A browser requests a resource using a URL and a protocol such as HTTP; the server software processes the request and returns the requested resource or application response. The phrase “web server” is also commonly used for the computer on which that software runs. MDN Web Docs explains both meanings, while Apache’s getting-started documentation describes how clients make requests and receive responses.

Software such as Apache HTTP Server or NGINX can run on many kinds of computing environments. The software’s job and the hardware allocation are separate questions: having a web server does not, by itself, mean a site has an entire physical machine to itself.

In hosting, “dedicated” means the customer is allocated the whole physical server rather than a virtual portion of a host or a shared hosting environment. Google Cloud distinguishes shared, VPS, dedicated, and cloud hosting; it describes a VPS as a virtual partition with a dedicated portion of a physical server’s resources, whereas dedicated hosting assigns the entire physical server to the customer. Google Cloud’s hosting overview and Namecheap’s definition describe this allocation distinction.

- Hard Drive: 8TB (4 x 2TB) 7.2K RPM 6Gb/s SATA 3.5 Inch HDDs in RAID
Dedicated describes the hosting arrangement, not a special kind of web-server software. The customer may use the server to host websites, applications, or other services, and the chosen software and configuration determine how it handles web traffic.
How is a dedicated server different from shared hosting or a VPS?
| Hosting arrangement | Resource allocation | What “dedicated” means here |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | Multiple customers’ sites use a shared hosting environment. | The customer does not have the whole physical server. |
| VPS hosting | A virtual partition provides an allocated portion of a physical host’s resources. | Some resources are allocated to the VPS, but that is not the same as exclusive use of the entire physical machine. |
| Dedicated hosting | The customer is allocated an entire physical server. | The whole physical server is assigned to one customer. |
This is a distinction about allocation, not a guarantee about performance. Actual speed, security, and uptime depend on factors such as configuration, workload, network, and how the server is managed. Dedicated hosting gives the customer more direct control over resources and configuration, but it also commonly places more technical management responsibility on the customer; Namecheap notes that dedicated servers suit customers with the technical background to manage and configure them.

Can multiple websites share one physical machine?
Yes. A web server can host multiple websites on one machine using virtual hosts. Apache’s documentation defines virtual hosting as “the practice of running more than one web site (such as company1.example.com and company2.example.com) on a single machine.” Apache’s virtual-host documentation covers the approach. As a result, seeing a site online—or even seeing many separate domains—does not tell you that each site has its own dedicated physical server.

- It tells you: the hosting arrangement assigns one customer the whole physical server, rather than only a virtual portion or a shared hosting environment.
- It does not tell you: which web-server software is installed, whether the server is well configured, how much traffic it can handle, or whether it will be fast, secure, or continuously available.
- It does not necessarily mean: one website per machine. A customer can configure a dedicated server to host multiple sites.
Hosting providers often position dedicated servers for high-traffic websites and applications, but there is no universal traffic threshold that makes a server “dedicated” or guarantees that dedicated hosting is the right fit. The defining feature remains the allocation of the physical machine.
