A dedicated IP address is assigned exclusively to one user, account, or organization instead of being shared among multiple customers. With a VPN, it is a reserved exit address that websites see when you connect. The term can also describe a fixed address for a home or business internet connection, which is a different thing.
What “dedicated” means—and how it differs from “static”
Dedicated describes who uses the address: one account or organization has it exclusively. Static describes whether the address is intended to stay the same. A dedicated address is often stable, but the terms are not interchangeable: an address can be dedicated without a permanent guarantee, and a static address need not be exclusive in every context.
Provider arrangements can vary. ExpressVPN says a dedicated address is assigned to a single user, organization, or account and usually remains stable, though it may change if the provider reallocates addresses during a service or account change. Its Support FAQ describes its own implementation this way: “A dedicated IP address is tied to a specific VPN location, and you will be assigned the same IP address every time you connect to that server.” ExpressVPN’s dedicated IP glossary and Support FAQ describe that provider’s offering, not a universal rule for all VPNs.
Dedicated VPN IP vs. your ISP’s static IP
A VPN dedicated IP is the address at the VPN provider’s exit point. Your device sends traffic through an encrypted tunnel, and external websites generally see the VPN exit address rather than your home connection’s public address. An ISP static IP, by contrast, is assigned to your internet connection or network. It is not automatically a VPN address.

This distinction matters for remote access. A worker may connect through a VPN dedicated IP so an employer’s system sees an approved source address, even when the worker is away from the office. A static ISP address is more relevant when services need to reach the customer’s own network at a consistent address.
Dedicated and shared VPN IPs compared
| Consideration | Dedicated VPN IP | Shared VPN IP |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses the exit address | Reserved for one user, account, or organization, depending on the provider. | Used by multiple VPN customers. |
| Address consistency | Usually intended to remain consistent; reassignment policies vary by provider. | Can vary as customers connect to different servers or addresses. |
| IP allowlisting | Useful when a work system or service needs to recognize a stable source address. | Less suitable when access rules expect one specific address. |
| Traffic blending | Less blending with other VPN users on that exit address. | Traffic from multiple users shares the address. |
| Reputation effects | Less exposed to actions by other customers sharing that same address, but the address may still be flagged. | Another user’s activity can affect the shared address’s reputation. |
| Correlation over time | A consistent address can make activity associated with the same account easier to correlate across sessions. | Shared use can make it harder to distinguish one customer by IP alone. |
These are general trade-offs, not promises about how a particular website will behave. Services may use other signals besides IP address, and a VPN exit can still be recognized as VPN or data-center traffic.

When a dedicated IP is useful
Access controlled by source IP
The clearest use is an IP allowlist: an organization can permit connections from a known address, allowing an authorized person to connect from different locations while presenting the expected source IP. ExpressVPN lists allowlisted corporate systems and personal servers among common uses; its glossary explains those examples.
An allowlist is only one access control. It identifies where a connection appears to come from; it does not establish who is using it. Keep strong account authentication and other security controls in place.

Services that react to shared-address reputation
A shared exit address may inherit reputation problems caused by other users, which can contribute to extra checks or blocks. A dedicated address avoids sharing that particular address with other customers, but it does not guarantee fewer CAPTCHAs, successful logins, or access to banking, streaming, or other services. Websites make decisions using multiple signals, and they may still recognize a dedicated VPN address.
Privacy, security, and performance trade-offs
Shared addresses blend traffic from multiple users at the IP level. Using a dedicated address consistently reduces that blending and may make one account’s activity easier to link across sessions. A dedicated IP therefore is not a way to become anonymous; it changes the consistency and exclusivity of the visible address.

It also does not inherently improve encryption or speed. Encryption depends on the VPN service and connection, while throughput depends on factors such as network conditions, infrastructure, and server load. NordVPN’s documentation makes these distinctions for its service and notes that dedicated IPs can still be identified as VPN traffic; its dedicated IP overview is provider-specific.
More broadly, a dedicated address alone does not establish that a VPN provider’s network is secure. A 2024 paper by Teemu Rytilahti and Thorsten Holz, “Bad Neighbors: On Understanding VPN Provider Networks,” reports that most VPN providers tested lacked traffic filtering toward internally routable networks. That finding concerns VPN provider networks generally, not dedicated-IP products specifically. Read the paper abstract.

Provider details are not universal
Availability, pricing, locations, device limits, address stability, and privacy design depend on the provider and plan. ExpressVPN describes its own blind-token system and says its dedicated IP is available with some plans or as an add-on; those terms should not be assumed for other VPNs. ExpressVPN’s description is specific to its implementation.
Proton documents dedicated IPs for business customers as organization-exclusive leased addresses and identifies remote access and online-service reputation as possible uses. It also acknowledges that a company address is less private than a shared VPN address. These details describe Proton’s business offering, not the terms of every VPN provider.
How to decide whether you need one
- Choose a dedicated VPN IP when: a work or other system explicitly requires an approved, stable source address, or a specific workflow benefits from consistently using one exit address.
- A shared VPN IP may suit you when: you want ordinary VPN browsing and prefer traffic to blend with other customers using the same exit address.
- Ask the provider before subscribing: which locations are available, whether the feature is included or costs extra, how many devices can use it, what happens to the address if you cancel or change plans, and how account identity is separated from IP assignment.
Do not buy the feature on the assumption that it will make a connection faster, conceal VPN use, guarantee access to a restricted service, or replace authentication. Its clearest practical benefit is a consistent address when a system’s access rules depend on one.
