A data processing unit (DPU) is a programmable processor designed to handle data-center infrastructure work—especially networking, storage, and security—so those tasks do not all have to run on a server’s main CPU. DPUs commonly combine computing, network connectivity, and acceleration features, but their exact capabilities vary by vendor and model.
What a DPU does
Servers need to move data and provide infrastructure services as well as run applications. A DPU is built to take on some of that supporting work, such as processing network traffic, managing storage services, or handling security functions. This can free host CPU capacity for application computing; the actual effect depends on the hardware, software, and workload.

DPUs are primarily discussed as data-center infrastructure processors, rather than as everyday desktop components. The term describes a product category and architectural approach, not a single fixed specification shared by every vendor.

How a DPU is built
NVIDIA describes its DPU architecture as combining three elements: a programmable general-purpose processor, a high-performance network interface, and programmable acceleration engines. Together, these components can process data and infrastructure tasks close to where data enters or moves through a server. This is NVIDIA’s architecture framing, not a universal checklist for every DPU.

AMD’s February 25, 2026 explanation defines the category by its role: offloading networking, storage, and security tasks from the CPU. The two descriptions complement each other, but neither establishes an industry-wide standards definition.
DPU vs. CPU, GPU, and SmartNIC
| Component | Primary role | How it relates to a DPU |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | General-purpose computing in a host system. | A DPU can take on selected infrastructure tasks that might otherwise use CPU resources. |
| GPU | Accelerating computing workloads, commonly those with substantial parallel processing. | In NVIDIA’s explanation, the GPU accelerates computing while the DPU focuses on data-center infrastructure and data movement. |
| DPU | Processing infrastructure work such as networking, storage, security, and data movement. | Its specific features depend on the vendor and model. |
| SmartNIC | A network interface card with additional processing or offload capabilities. | A DPU may be integrated with SmartNIC hardware, but the terms are not interchangeable in every case. |
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang summarized that company’s distinction in a May 20, 2020 blog: “The CPU is for general-purpose computing, the GPU is for accelerated computing, and the DPU, which moves data around the data center, does data processing.” It is a useful explanation of NVIDIA’s framing, not a formal definition adopted across the industry.

Examples of DPUs
NVIDIA BlueField-2
NVIDIA’s BlueField-2 documentation describes the device as a data-center infrastructure-on-a-chip DPU for enterprise, high-performance computing, and cloud workloads. The documented functions include software-defined networking, storage, security, and management.
NVIDIA BlueField-3
NVIDIA’s HGX AI Factory architecture documentation specifies one BlueField-3 DPU per server in a particular configuration and describes a 400 Gb/s infrastructure compute platform. That figure applies to the stated NVIDIA configuration; it is not a general performance specification for DPUs.

These examples illustrate enterprise data-center hardware, not a standard consumer upgrade. Anyone evaluating a DPU for a server needs to check the specific product’s current specifications and compatibility with the server and its software environment.
What a DPU does not guarantee
Moving infrastructure work off the host CPU may leave more CPU resources available for applications, but that does not establish a predictable performance or efficiency gain for every system. Results depend on which tasks are offloaded and how the hardware and software are configured. The term alone does not promise a particular reduction in CPU use, latency, or power consumption.

Likewise, DPU, SmartNIC, IPU, and ordinary network interface card are not universally interchangeable labels. Product boundaries and feature sets vary, and there is no single specification in the cited vendor explanations that settles every naming distinction.

A DPU is a processor for data-center infrastructure tasks—most notably networking, storage, security, and data movement—that can be handled separately from a server’s general-purpose CPU workload. Think of it as a specialized infrastructure processor, not a faster CPU or a synonym for every SmartNIC.
