It automates parts of trading—not the risk of losing money or the need to choose and oversee a strategy.
How does a crypto trading bot work?
A typical bot runs through a repeating decision cycle. It gets market data, checks that information against its rules or model, decides whether a condition for trading has been met, and sends an order to an exchange through an application programming interface (API). An API lets software retrieve information and submit orders without a person signing in for every trade. Binance Academy’s explainer, updated June 25, 2026, describes this process.

- Collect data: The bot retrieves relevant market information from an exchange.
- Analyze: It evaluates the data using configured rules or a model.
- Check conditions: It determines whether the strategy’s criteria for an action are satisfied.
- Place an order: If they are, it submits an order through the exchange API.
For example, a rule-based bot could be set to trade when one moving average crosses another. Some newer products use machine-learning models, but that does not mean they can reliably predict market moves or avoid losses.
What strategies can a bot use?
A bot is an execution tool, not a strategy by itself. Common approaches include:
#1 Best Overall
- Language: english
- Book - trading: technical analysis masterclass: master the financial markets
- It is made up of premium quality material.
- Trend following: Trades according to signals that indicate a market trend.
- Arbitrage: Seeks to take advantage of price differences between exchanges.
- Scalping: Attempts to capture repeated small price movements.
- Dollar-cost averaging (DCA): Invests a set amount at regular intervals, regardless of the current price.
Which approach is suitable depends on a trader’s goals, risk tolerance, and market conditions. Backtesting—a check of how a strategy would have performed against historical data—can help reveal weaknesses. It cannot establish that the strategy will work in the future; Binance Academy cautions that past performance is not an indicator of future results.
What are the risks?
Automation can keep operating without a person placing each order, but it does not remove market or execution risk. Prices can move against a strategy, and technical failures or API errors can disrupt trading. Fees also affect results. Crypto.com’s risk warning, dated October 29, 2024, says that orders using its service may not execute at a particular time or price; it also warns that margin and derivatives strategies can lead to liquidation and additional losses. Those execution and service disclosures should be understood in the context of Crypto.com’s service, not as a guarantee about how every bot or provider operates.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Security is another practical concern. An exposed or compromised API key could give someone access to the permissions attached to it. Binance Academy advises granting only the permissions a bot needs and disabling withdrawals where possible. Review API access and the exchange account’s security settings before connecting a bot.
Be wary of marketing that promises guaranteed or unusually high returns, including claims that artificial intelligence makes profits certain. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission warns that “AI technology can’t predict the future or sudden market changes.” The CFTC also advises considering the asset’s risk and the effect of fees, spreads, and subscriptions, and researching the people and website behind an offer. No market-wide bot-return or failure-rate figure is established by these sources.

What should you check before using one?
If you are evaluating a bot, consider how it fits your strategy and how you would supervise it—not just its feature list or advertised performance. Useful checks include:
- Which exchanges and trading pairs it supports, and whether those match your needs.
- Whether its strategy options fit your goals and risk tolerance.
- What API permissions it requests, and whether withdrawals can remain disabled.
- How it handles downtime, errors, and order monitoring.
- What fees apply, including exchange fees, spreads, subscriptions, or other charges.
- How any claimed performance history was produced, including whether it is a backtest or actual trading record.
Do not treat a backtest or a list of features as proof that a bot will make money. An automated process still follows assumptions and permissions chosen by people.

Does “algorithmic trading” have a specific legal meaning?
In the EU, ESMA’s July 15, 2022 Q&A describes algorithmic trading under MiFID II in relation to financial instruments: a computer algorithm automatically determines order parameters such as whether to initiate an order, when, at what price, or in what quantity, with limited or no human intervention. That definition is scoped to the MiFID II framework; it does not establish that every crypto asset or crypto bot falls within it. See ESMA Q&A 1490.
