A crypto name service maps a readable name, such as alice.eth, to blockchain information a computer or application can use, often a wallet address. Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is one example of this broader category—not another name for every crypto naming system.
What is a crypto name service?
A crypto name service is a naming system that connects human-readable names with machine-readable identifiers or records on a blockchain. Instead of working only with a long wallet address, a person or compatible app may be able to use a name. Depending on the service and its records, that name can point to one or more cryptocurrency addresses or other information.

The broader category is often called a blockchain naming system. ENS describes itself specifically as “a distributed, open, and extensible naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain.” Its documentation explains that ENS names can map to Ethereum addresses, other cryptocurrency addresses, content hashes, metadata, and additional records: ENS documentation.

The details vary by service. ENS provides a useful example of the basic components: a registry, resolvers, and registrars.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Registry, resolver, and registrar
- Registry: ENS’s registry records a name’s owner, resolver, and time-to-live (TTL), which indicates how long lookup information may be cached.
- Resolver: The resolver supplies the records associated with a name, such as an address or other configured information.
- Registrar: Registrars establish the rules for allocating names under a top-level domain, such as
.eth.
ENS names are hierarchical and separated by dots, as in alice.eth. A lookup follows the name through the relevant registry and resolver to retrieve its records. ENS also supports reverse resolution, which can associate a readable name or other metadata with an address. The roles and records are described in the ENS documentation and its registry reference.
What happens when you use a name
A compatible wallet, payment flow, or other application can look up a name and use or display the corresponding record. The result depends on what is configured for that name and what the application supports; a name does not automatically work in every crypto app.

Before sending funds, check the resolved destination in the wallet or app. A readable name is a convenience, not proof that its records are correct or that the recipient is trustworthy. ENS’s practical guidance on names and addresses is available in its ENS support article.
Is a crypto name service the same as DNS?
No. The Domain Name System (DNS) and crypto name services share a broad purpose: making names useful for locating or identifying resources. Their technical architecture and namespace behavior can differ. ENS uses Ethereum smart contracts, and its documentation explains how its architecture differs from DNS: ENS documentation.

ENS can also integrate certain DNS names after ownership is verified through smart contracts. That integration does not mean every blockchain naming system belongs to the public DNS root or that every browser and app will resolve those names. ICANN’s 2024 technical report on blockchain name systems treats them as a category and discusses examples including ENS and Unstoppable Domains. For a particular service, its chain, supported records, and resolution behavior need to be considered separately.

What to check before relying on a name
- Supported networks and records: Confirm which blockchains and address types the service can represent.
- Application support: Check whether the wallet, exchange, or app you intend to use can resolve the name.
- Configured destination: Inspect the address or other record the name currently resolves to before acting.
- Control and recovery: Understand who controls the name and its records, and how transfer or recovery works for that service.
- Registration rules: Check the service’s own current rules for allocation and renewal; these are service-specific and can change.
