A Copilot+ PC is a Windows 11 computer that meets Microsoft’s hardware requirements for a set of on-device and cloud-assisted AI experiences. The defining threshold is a neural processing unit (NPU) rated at 40+ trillion operations per second (TOPS), alongside baseline memory and storage requirements. The label covers capabilities such as Recall, Click to Do, image enhancement, game upscaling, improved screenshots, flexible voice commands, live-caption translation and Windows Studio Effects.

It does not mean every feature is available on every model. Processor family, device configuration, Windows updates, language, region, account status, internet access and feature-specific requirements all affect what actually works.

What “Copilot+ PC” means

Microsoft defines Copilot+ PC as a Windows hardware category rather than as a particular app or assistant. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications describe Copilot+ PC features as being designed to enhance everyday tasks with advanced AI capabilities. In practical terms, the category identifies PCs with a sufficiently powerful NPU and the supporting hardware needed for Microsoft’s newer AI features.

An NPU is a processor dedicated to neural-network workloads. Offloading suitable jobs to it can reduce the amount of AI processing handled by the CPU or GPU and can enable features that run locally. However, “Copilot+” is not a promise of identical software on every machine. Microsoft explicitly says availability can depend on the device, region, language, processor, account and the requirements of an individual feature.

The baseline hardware threshold

Requirement What Microsoft specifies Why it matters
NPU 40+ TOPS Provides the minimum AI-processing capability for Copilot+ PC experiences.
Memory 16 GB RAM Supports Windows, local AI models and ordinary multitasking.
Storage 256 GB Baseline capacity listed for Copilot+ PC experiences; individual features may need more free space.
Feature-specific hardware Varies Examples include a compatible camera for Windows Studio Effects and a Snapdragon X Series processor for Automatic Super Resolution.

These are category and experience requirements, not a performance ranking. Two PCs can both qualify while differing substantially in processor speed, battery life, graphics performance, storage capacity and the AI features they expose.

Which AI features does a Copilot+ PC support?

The following map reflects Microsoft’s documented Copilot+ experiences. “Available” means Microsoft lists the capability for the category; it does not guarantee that it is enabled in every country, language or model.

Feature What it does Important limits
Recall (preview) Searches a timeline of periodic screen snapshots with natural-language queries. Opt-in; local processing and storage; security, storage, language and supported-browser requirements.
Click to Do Recognizes text and images on screen and offers actions such as summarizing, rewriting, making a bulleted list, copying and supported image operations. Actions vary by language, region, device and character set; selected actions can send information elsewhere.
Agent in Settings Helps users find or change settings using an AI-assisted interface. Supported languages and availability vary.
Automatic Super Resolution Upscales supported games to improve perceived image quality. Works with a curated game list and is available on Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X Series processors.
Photos: Super resolution Enhances image resolution in the Photos experience. Microsoft lists it as a Copilot+ PC-only capability; actual availability can still vary.
Snipping Tool: Perfect screenshot Provides an AI-assisted screenshot capability. Listed for Copilot+ PCs; feature behavior can depend on Windows version and device support.
Voice Access: Flexible commands Lets users issue more natural or flexible voice commands. Voice Access supports multiple languages, but some functions are English-only.
Windows Studio Effects Adds camera and audio/video effects for calls. Requires a compatible camera; available effects vary by device.
Live captions translation Translates video and audio subtitles into English in real time. Microsoft describes support for more than 40 source languages; this is not a promise of arbitrary bidirectional translation.

Recall: the most demanding and privacy-sensitive feature

Recall is a preview feature that creates periodic snapshots of what appears on your screen, then lets you search that history in natural language. Microsoft says snapshots and their analysis are processed locally on the PC. Recall does not record audio or save continuous video. You can pause or disable saving, exclude apps and websites, and delete snapshots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requirements before Recall can be enabled

  • A Copilot+ PC with a 40+ TOPS NPU, at least 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.
  • At least 50 GB of free storage when enabling Recall.
  • Device encryption or BitLocker.
  • Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security with at least one biometric sign-in option.
  • A supported Windows configuration, language and browser. Microsoft lists English, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish among its optimized languages.

Snapshot saving pauses automatically if available free space falls below 25 GB. That threshold is separate from the 50 GB free-space requirement used to enable Recall. If you need to reclaim room, deleting snapshots or changing the storage allocation is more appropriate than assuming the feature is malfunctioning.

A 47Wh battery supports mobile workflows, while the included 65W power adapter enables efficient charging. Dolby Audio stereo speakers and dual-array microphones enhance online meetings and classes.

Because Recall can contain sensitive work, messages or account information, treat its snapshot database like other personal data on the PC. Use the exclusion controls for sites and applications that should never appear in the timeline, pause capture when appropriate, and remove stored snapshots you no longer need. The controls are user-managed; Recall is not silently recording everything by default.

Click to Do: acting on what is on screen

Click to Do analyzes visible text and images locally and presents actions for selected content. For text, Microsoft documents examples such as summarizing, rewriting, creating a bulleted list and copying. Supported image actions can also appear when the selected material is a picture.

The local analysis does not mean every subsequent operation remains on the PC. If you choose an action that sends content to a web search or another online destination, that information leaves the device. Microsoft’s Click to Do documentation also lists a minimum 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, eight logical processors and 256 GB of storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why an action may be missing

  • The command is not supported for your language, region or character set.
  • Your PC meets the general Copilot+ threshold but not a requirement for that particular action.
  • The Windows component or relevant app has not received the required update.
  • The selected content is not recognized as a supported text or image type.
  • The operation requires an online service, account or permission that is unavailable.

In other words, Click to Do is a context-sensitive action layer, not a universal set of commands that appears identically on every Copilot+ PC.

Image, gaming, voice and camera capabilities

Image creation and processing components

Microsoft’s January 2026 component documentation describes built-in Copilot+ PC components for image creation, image processing, image transformation and Phi Silica. These are underlying Windows components rather than promises of separate standalone applications. Microsoft says they are serviced separately from core Windows feature updates, so a component update can affect AI behavior even when the main Windows version has not changed.

Automatic Super Resolution for games

Automatic Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution-looking image from a lower-resolution render in supported games. Microsoft limits the feature to a curated set of titles and Copilot+ PCs using Snapdragon X Series processors. A Copilot+ PC built around another processor family should not be assumed to support it.

Photos Super Resolution and Perfect Screenshot

Photos Super Resolution is an image-enhancement capability Microsoft lists as available only on Copilot+ PCs. Perfect Screenshot is an AI-assisted Snipping Tool capability likewise listed for the category. The label alone does not establish identical controls, processing speed or output quality across devices; those can change with Windows updates and hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Voice Access and Studio Effects

Flexible commands extend Voice Access beyond a fixed command vocabulary. Microsoft supports multiple Voice Access languages, while noting that some functions are available only in English. Windows Studio Effects can adjust camera and audio/video presentation during calls, but they require a compatible camera and the available effects depend on the device.

Live-caption translation

Microsoft’s business description says live captions can translate video and audio subtitles into English from more than 40 languages. Read that as a source-language-to-English capability as described by Microsoft, not as a guarantee that every language pair works in both directions or that every region receives the same language set.

Copilot versus Copilot+ PC features

Windows Copilot and the Copilot+ designation are related but not interchangeable. Microsoft lists Copilot for Windows 11 PCs generally, while identifying the experiences above as features associated with the Copilot+ category. A regular Windows 11 PC can therefore offer Copilot without supporting Recall, Click to Do or the other NPU-dependent experiences.

Some actions across Windows AI features may require a Microsoft account, an internet connection, a subscription, compatible hardware or regional availability. Check the requirement for the exact action rather than assuming that the Copilot+ badge removes all online or account dependencies.

How to evaluate a Copilot+ PC before buying

Use the exact configuration, not only the marketing label, as your checklist.

  1. Confirm the NPU rating. Verify that the advertised processor includes an NPU rated at 40+ TOPS. Do not infer this from a generic “AI PC” label.
  2. Check RAM and storage. Confirm at least 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. If Recall matters, leave substantially more free space than the 50 GB enablement threshold.
  3. Match the processor to the feature. Automatic Super Resolution currently has the Snapdragon X Series requirement documented by Microsoft. Other experiences can have their own processor or graphics dependencies.
  4. Read the model-specific feature list. Look for the exact Windows edition, camera hardware, supported browsers and included components rather than assuming the full table above applies.
  5. Verify language and region. Check the languages offered for Recall, Click to Do, Voice Access and captions in your location. Character-set support can affect Click to Do actions.
  6. Identify account and connectivity needs. Separate genuinely local processing from actions that call a web service, require sign-in or need a subscription.
  7. Plan privacy controls. If the computer handles confidential work, decide whether Recall’s snapshot history is acceptable and whether you will use app and website exclusions.

Common limitations and what to check when something is missing

  • The PC has the badge but no feature: Install available Windows and component updates, then verify the feature’s processor, language, region and account requirements.
  • Recall will not turn on: Check free space (50 GB is required to enable it), encryption, Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security and biometric sign-in. If storage later drops below 25 GB free, snapshot saving pauses.
  • Click to Do offers only a few actions: Confirm the selected content type, language, region and character set. Actions that involve web search may also require connectivity.
  • Studio Effects are unavailable: Confirm that the camera is compatible; the NPU threshold alone does not provide camera effects.
  • Game upscaling is absent: Check whether the PC uses a Snapdragon X Series processor and whether the game is on Microsoft’s supported list.
  • Voice or caption language is unavailable: Review the language-specific support. Microsoft documents broader multilingual support but also English-only functions and English-targeted caption translation.

What the label ultimately tells you

A Copilot+ PC guarantees that the machine is built around Microsoft’s current 40+ TOPS NPU class and baseline 16 GB RAM/256 GB storage requirements. It gives you access to a growing set of Windows AI experiences spanning screen search, contextual actions, image work, gaming, voice and video. It does not guarantee that every feature is installed, supported in your language or region, compatible with your processor, or entirely offline.

For the authoritative, changing details, consult Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications, Copilot+ PCs and AI Features for Businesses, Recall application card, Click to Do management documentation, Recall privacy controls and Microsoft’s Copilot+ AI components documentation. These pages identify the current requirements and are more reliable than a generic badge when a specific feature is important to you.
