A connected DVD player is a DVD-capable disc player that connects to your home network through Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both. Depending on the model, that connection may enable internet streaming, software updates, or access to media stored on another device on the same network. “Connected” describes network access; it does not guarantee a particular app or service.
What does “connected” mean on a DVD player?
The player still plays discs. Network access adds features that use either the internet or your home network. For example, LG’s network Blu-ray/DVD player manual describes connecting to a local area network through the player’s LAN port or internal wireless module, with a broadband home network supporting software updates, Home Link, BD-LIVE, and streaming services. What can a connected DVD player do?
- Stream online services: Some models offer internet-delivered entertainment. The specific apps depend on the model and region, and may require registration, a paid subscription, or other fees.
- Play media from your home network: Some players can access photos, music, or video stored on compatible computers or media servers. The player and the source device generally need to share the same local network; LG’s manual describes connecting PCs or DLNA servers through the same router.
- Download software updates: A network connection may let a player retrieve firmware or software updates. Availability and update methods depend on the model.
These features are not interchangeable: a player may support streaming but not local media sharing, or offer updates without a broad app selection.

How does it connect?
Network hardware varies. A model may have built-in Wi-Fi, an Ethernet port for a wired connection, or both. Check the exact model’s specifications and manual: the word “connected” alone does not identify which connection methods are available.

Does every connected DVD player stream Netflix?
No. The label does not guarantee Netflix or any other named app, and a network connection by itself cannot ensure that a service remains available. Confirm support for the exact player model and your country, and check whether the service needs a separate subscription or registration. Sony, for example, lists online entertainment services for its BDP-BX370 streaming Blu-ray Disc player, which also plays DVDs, and cautions that fees, registration, subscriptions, and regional availability can apply. Sony BDP-BX370 product page
Is a connected DVD player the same as a Blu-ray player?
Not necessarily. Some connected players are DVD-only; others are Blu-ray players that also play DVDs. Describe the latter as Blu-ray/DVD players rather than assuming “connected DVD player” identifies its disc formats. For instance, Sony describes the BDP-BX370 as a streaming Blu-ray Disc player and lists DVD playback. Its DVD upscaling is a picture feature, separate from network connectivity.

What to check on a specific model
- Disc formats: Verify whether it plays DVD only or also Blu-ray, and check support for any recordable discs you use.
- Network hardware: Look for built-in Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both.
- Network functions: Check whether the model supports streaming apps, local-network media, software updates, or only some of these.
- Service support: Confirm the current app list for your model and region, plus any subscription or registration requirements.
Feature sets differ by model and generation. Panasonic’s archived DMP-BDT370GN specifications, for example, list DLNA, BD-Live, internet apps, firmware updates, and network-drive access alongside built-in wireless LAN. Those archived specifications illustrate the range of possible functions; they do not establish that its services remain available today. Panasonic archived specifications
Local-network media also depends on compatible devices and formats, not just internet access. Philips’ BDP5500 manual describes DLNA access to media on certified home-network devices and internet-delivered services; it marks at least one named service feature as US-only. Philips BDP5500 manual
