A computer power supply unit (PSU) supplies electrical power to a computer. In a typical desktop, it converts mains alternating current (AC) from the wall into lower-voltage direct current (DC) for the computer’s internal components.
What does a PSU do?
The PSU is the electrical link between the wall outlet and a desktop’s components. It delivers power through cables and connectors to hardware such as the motherboard, graphics card, and drives. Intel describes the PSU as a critical desktop component because it supplies power throughout the system.

A PSU is not a battery: it does not store energy to keep a desktop running when wall power is disconnected. It is also not a surge protector, which is a separate device intended to protect equipment from certain power surges, or a software setting.

For a replacement or new build, check the computer’s requirements and the PSU’s specifications together. A supply that has enough wattage can still be incompatible if it does not fit the case or provide the required connectors.

- 80 PLUS GOLD CERTIFIED
- 10-year limited warranty, guaranteeing long term reliable operation
- Fully modular design
- ATX 3.1 & PCIE 5.1
- Output capacity: Confirm that the PSU meets the power requirements of the system’s components. There is no single wattage recommendation that applies to every build.
- Form factor and dimensions: Check the case’s supported PSU size and mounting position. Desktop supplies come in multiple mechanical sizes, as Intel’s ATX design-guide description notes.
- Cables and connectors: Verify that the PSU has the connectors needed for the installed motherboard, graphics card, drives, and other hardware.
- Protection features: Look for documented protections, including over-voltage and short-circuit protection.
- Efficiency: Compare efficiency ratings with their test conditions in mind. Efficiency describes conversion performance; it does not establish that a PSU fits, meets a system’s power needs, or is reliable overall.
For a specific computer, use its documentation and check the PSU label for compatibility details. A product-category description alone cannot confirm that a particular model will work in a particular build.
What does PSU wattage mean, and how is it different from efficiency?
Wattage describes the PSU’s power-output capacity. Efficiency describes how much of the input power is converted into useful output rather than lost, including as heat. They answer different questions: whether the supply can meet the system’s power needs, and how effectively it converts electricity under specified conditions.

Intel’s ATX Version 3.0 multi-rail desktop PSU guide specifies efficiency testing at nominal 115 VAC and 230 VAC input, with defined full, typical, and light loads. Its 115 VAC table gives these minimum efficiencies:
| Load | Minimum efficiency | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 100% | 70% | Intel, ATX Version 3.0 multi-rail desktop PSU guide, dated 2023-02-01; 115 VAC input. |
| 50% | 72% | Intel, ATX Version 3.0 multi-rail desktop PSU guide, dated 2023-02-01; 115 VAC input. |
| 20% | 65% | Intel, ATX Version 3.0 multi-rail desktop PSU guide, dated 2023-02-01; 115 VAC input. |
These are minimums in that specific guide, not universal efficiency figures for all PSUs and not the 80 PLUS thresholds. Intel’s consumer guidance describes 80 PLUS as an efficiency rating category; a label should be interpreted in light of its applicable test conditions, not treated as a general measure of compatibility or product quality.
