A computer on a stick is a small, self-contained computer that plugs into an HDMI port on a TV or monitor and uses that screen as its display. The stick provides the computing hardware and software; the screen, power, network connection and an input device complete the setup.
What makes it a computer rather than a streaming dongle?
A computer on a stick contains general-purpose computing components—typically a processor, memory, flash storage and wireless connectivity—and can run applications. A streaming dongle, by contrast, is primarily designed to deliver media services. The two can look similar and both may plug into HDMI, but their purpose and capabilities differ. B&H’s archived Intel Compute Stick listing, for example, describes a processor, RAM, onboard storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB ports.

“PC on a stick,” “screenless PC” and “any screen computer” are alternate names used for this form factor. The Computer Language Company’s reference definition describes a USB-drive-sized computer that connects to a TV through HDMI. “Screenless” means it has no built-in display; it does not mean it works without a screen.

The stick plugs into an HDMI-equipped television or monitor, which supplies the picture. It also needs power, usually through a separate power connection, and a way to receive user input. How the power and peripherals connect depends on the model; USB may be used for power or for accessories, while HDMI carries the display output.

On the cited Intel model, B&H lists a micro-USB power adapter, an HDMI extender cable, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 4.0 and microSD support. These are specifications for that particular model, not requirements for every computer stick.
Input methods
Depending on the device, input may come from a wireless keyboard and mouse, a remote control, or a smartphone or tablet. The reference definition describes these as possible approaches; the Intel listing specifically mentions a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Check a device’s own compatibility details rather than assuming it supports every option.

What can it be used for?
Because it runs computer software, a stick PC may be used for web browsing, online media, light productivity or gaming, subject to its hardware and software support. B&H also lists thin-client access and digital signage among uses for the Intel model. Those are listed use cases, not independent performance test results or guarantees that every stick can handle each task well.

How is it different from similar devices?
- Streaming stick: Primarily provides media apps and services; a computer stick contains general-purpose computing hardware and runs applications.
- Bootable operating-system USB drive: Provides software that starts on an existing computer. It is not itself a self-contained HDMI computer. For example, StartMeStick’s product page describes an operating system on a USB stick that boots on a compatible PC or Mac.
- Single-board computer: A compact computer built on a circuit board, rather than necessarily packaged as an HDMI plug-in stick. The Intel Community’s 2018 discussion mentions an Intel Compute Stick as an alternative in that context; it is historical discussion, not a current product comparison.
“USB computer” can be misleading on its own: the typical display connection is HDMI, while USB may provide power or connect peripherals.
