What Is a Computer? How It Processes and Stores Data

A computer follows programmed instructions to manipulate data. See how its core functions work and how personal computers, servers, mobile devices, and embedded computers differ.

A computer is a machine that manipulates data by following programmed instructions. It can take in information, process it, retain data or instructions, and present results. The term can mean the processing device itself or, more broadly, a computer system made up of hardware and software working together.

What is a computer?

The Open University’s OpenLearn glossary defines a computer as “a machine that manipulates data following a list of instructions that have been programmed into it.” Put simply, a computer carries out instructions to work with information. It is not merely a device that accepts something and produces a response: the programmed instructions and the processing of data are central to what it does. OpenLearn glossary

In introductory lessons, a computer is often described as a programmable electronic device that accepts input, processes it, and generates output. That is a useful starting point, but computers do not all look like a desktop PC or expose the same parts to a user. Some are small controllers built into appliances; others are servers that provide resources to many systems.

What is a computer system?

A computer system generally means the usable combination of a processing device, memory, input and output, storage, and software or instructions. Some definitions set a wider boundary: the FDA glossary reproduces an ANSI definition that includes one or more computers, associated peripherals and software, shared storage, and programs that manipulate data. This broader usage helps explain why a computer system may include connected equipment rather than just one machine. FDA glossary of computer-system terminology

How does a computer work?

A common way to explain a digital computer is the cycle of input, processing, storage, and output. These are connected functions, not necessarily four separate physical boxes: storage may be described as a stage or as a supporting part of the system.

  1. Input: A person types text, taps a screen, speaks, or selects a command. An input device turns that action into data the computer can represent.
  2. Processing: A program supplies instructions, and the processor executes them using data held in registers or memory. For example, a text editor follows instructions to display and modify the characters a person entered. The processor does not understand text as a person does; it executes machine-readable instructions.
  3. Storage: Data and instructions may be held temporarily in memory while work is underway or retained in storage for later use. Whether information is kept depends on the program and the computer’s design.
  4. Output: The result is converted into a form people or other devices can use, such as text or an image on a screen, sound from a speaker, or a printed page.

OpenStax describes input/output devices as translating user input into machine-representable data and converting results into formats such as images or sound. It describes the CPU as fetching, decoding, and executing instructions, with data available in registers or memory. OpenStax: Computer Systems Organization

What are the main features of a computer?

Rather than treating “features” as a universal checklist, it is more accurate to describe the common capabilities that follow from the definition:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Programmability: A computer can carry out different tasks when given different instructions or programs.
  • Data manipulation: It processes data according to those instructions, such as organizing, calculating, or changing information.
  • Input and exchange: It can receive data from a user, a device, or another system.
  • Output: It can make a result available to a user or another system.
  • Memory and storage: It can hold instructions and data during processing, and may retain information for future use.

These capabilities vary by design. An embedded controller, for example, may perform a narrow control task rather than serve as a general-purpose computer. Accuracy likewise depends on the input, instructions, software, and hardware; it is not an unconditional property of every computer.

What are the common types of computers?

There is no single exhaustive classification. A practical introduction distinguishes computers by their form and purpose:

Type Typical form or use General-purpose or specialized?
Personal computer Desktop or laptop intended mainly for individual use. Generally general-purpose.
Server A computer that provides services or resources to other systems. Usually general-purpose, configured for shared services.
Mobile personal computer Tablet or smartphone designed for handheld use. Generally general-purpose.
Embedded computer A processor built into a larger device to control a specific function, such as in a washing machine or microwave oven. Specialized for the device or control task.

The categories overlap in some respects: the table describes common form and purpose, not a formal standards-based taxonomy. A phone is both a mobile device and a personal computer, while server describes a role a computer performs.

Why the definition depends on context

In everyday conversation, “computer” often means a desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. In computing, it can refer more generally to a machine that executes programmed instructions to manipulate data. “Computer system” often includes the software, memory, storage, and connected input/output equipment needed to use that machine. The boundary can vary with the context, especially for specialized programmable devices.
