A clean install is a fresh software or operating-system installation that does not carry the existing installation forward as an in-place upgrade. The distinction matters most for what happens to your files, apps, and settings: a clean install may remove them, so check the exact installer’s options and back up anything you need before starting.
What “clean install” means
In general, a clean install replaces or removes the previous version rather than adding new components to the existing installation. An in-place upgrade works on the installation already there and may retain selected apps or data. The exact wording and behavior depend on the product and installation method.

For example, TechTarget’s definition contrasts a clean installation with an upgrade that retains elements of an earlier version. The Trident OS-deployment glossary describes it as a new OS installation that does not update or modify an existing OS; that can mean either installing an OS for the first time or replacing one already present.

Microsoft documents three Windows Setup choices that illustrate how retention can differ. These are Windows-specific labels, not universal terms used by every installer.
#1 Best Overall
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
| Windows Setup option | What it keeps, according to Microsoft |
|---|---|
Clean |
Performs a clean Windows installation; Microsoft’s setup reference does not describe this choice as retaining personal files, apps, or settings. |
Upgrade |
Saves apps and data. |
DataOnly |
Saves data but not apps. |
These choices are described in Microsoft’s Windows Setup installation-process reference. Do not assume that another operating system or application offers the same choices under the same names.
What a clean Windows installation can remove
Microsoft warns that its clean-install procedure removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and changes made in Settings. Its instructions call this an advanced option. A clean install is therefore not automatically harmless to personal data, even if the goal is simply to start over or replace the operating system.
Before using Microsoft’s Windows installation-media procedure, back up the files you need and check that the backup is accessible. Also make sure you have the installation media and other product-specific information needed for your chosen method. The cited instructions explain a Windows workflow; they do not establish the steps, partition choices, licensing behavior, or retention options for every platform.

Do you need a USB drive?
No single installation method applies to every operating system or application. For one Windows workflow, Microsoft’s installation-media tool can create bootable USB or DVD media. A USB drive is a tool for that workflow, not a universal prerequisite for every clean installation.
How to choose between a clean install and an upgrade
Start with the outcome you want, then verify what the specific installer will retain before committing.
- Choose based on retention: Check separately whether your files, apps, settings, and manufacturer customizations will carry over.
- Check the starting state: An upgrade modifies the existing installation; a clean install establishes a new one rather than carrying the old installation forward.
- Prepare for the selected method: Confirm that your backup is usable and that you have the product-specific installation media or other requirements.
- Follow the exact product and version guidance: Installer labels and available retention options vary by operating system, version, and setup route.
A Windows 11 rollback example
Timing can affect recovery options. Microsoft’s Windows 11 FAQ says that someone who upgrades a Windows 10 device to Windows 11 can move back to Windows 10 within 10 days while retaining files and data migrated to Windows 11. After that period, Microsoft says files and data must be backed up manually and a clean install performed to return. This is guidance for the Windows versions and scenario described in that FAQ, not a general rule for all upgrades.
