What Is a Chromium Browser Extension? How It Works

A Chromium browser extension adds or changes browser features through a manifest, components, and declared permissions. Support can vary across Chromium-based browsers.

A Chromium browser extension is a small software program that adds to or changes a browser’s features or behavior. It uses the browser’s extension system and is typically organized around a root manifest.json file that declares its components, resources, and permissions. Chrome’s documentation explains the model in detail, but Chromium-based browsers may differ in support and distribution.

What a Chromium browser extension does

Extensions can customize parts of the browser interface, respond to browser events, or interact with web pages. They are commonly built with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. The term describes a way to extend a browser; it does not refer to one particular extension or guarantee that every Chromium-based browser supports every extension feature.

How an extension is structured

Every extension requires a root file named manifest.json. It identifies the extension and can declare its resources, permissions, and the files that run in different contexts. A minimal extension may consist only of a manifest; extensions with more features can include several distinct components.

Service workers and content scripts

A service worker handles browser events and does not have direct access to the page’s DOM. A content script runs JavaScript in the context of a web page. These roles are separate: extension code does not operate as one unrestricted script with automatic access to both browser internals and page content.

Interface elements

Depending on its features, an extension may provide a toolbar action or popup, a side panel, or other browser-facing components. Its manifest and associated files describe how those pieces are used.

What permissions mean for users

An extension declares API permissions and, where relevant, host permissions. Host permissions identify matching sites the extension may interact with; some browser API capabilities also require a specific permission. Access to a site can allow meaningful interaction with it, so requested access is worth considering in light of the extension’s stated purpose.

Some permissions or site patterns can trigger warnings or require consent. Optional permissions can instead be requested when a user tries a feature that needs them, allowing the extension to explain the request and the user to grant access for that feature.

Does a Chromium extension work in every Chromium-based browser?

Not necessarily. The Chromium project’s extensions design document describes a goal of having extensions work the same in Chromium as in Google Chrome. That is a design goal, not a guarantee of identical behavior across every Chromium-based browser, store, API, or version.

Chrome’s developer documentation is a useful guide to the extension model, but it describes Chrome’s implementation. Browser support and distribution can vary, so check the documentation and extension store for the specific browser you use. Chrome’s documentation also notes that the Chrome Web Store no longer accepts Manifest V2 extensions and points developers toward Manifest V3 migration; that policy is specific to the Chrome Web Store and may change.

How to assess an extension before installing it

  • Check whether its stated purpose matches the features you want.
  • Review the permissions and site access it requests, and consider whether they make sense for those features.
  • Confirm that the extension is available and supported in your browser and its extension store.
  • Consider the publisher and the information available about how the extension works.
