The integrated device is called an embedded MTA, or E-MTA. A regular cable modem may provide internet access without supporting phone service, and having a phone jack does not guarantee that your provider will approve or activate the device.
What the cable modem and MTA each do
The cable modem connects your equipment to the provider’s DOCSIS network, which carries internet traffic over the cable system. The MTA supplies the telephone-facing interface and the functions needed to carry voice over IP, including codecs and signaling for call features and quality of service. When both parts are integrated into one device, it is an E-MTA. CableLabs defines one as “a DOCSIS cable modem (CM) integrated with a PacketCable multimedia terminal adapter (MTA)” in its Embedded MTA Analog Interface and Powering specification.

In practical terms, the cable modem handles the network connection, while the MTA connects a conventional phone to the provider’s voice service. A standalone cable modem can still deliver internet without phone ports or voice capability; product listings distinguish models that do not support digital voice. See the provider’s and manufacturer’s documentation for the exact device.
What “VoIP” means in this context
VoIP means voice communication carried using internet protocol. The FCC defines interconnected VoIP service by features including real-time, two-way voice communications over a broadband connection, with the ability to place calls to and receive calls from the public switched telephone network. That describes the calling service, not a promise that any particular modem supports it. The modem and MTA are customer-side equipment that connect a telephone to the cable network.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How to tell whether a cable modem includes phone service
Look for terms such as “voice-enabled cable modem,” “cable modem with phone ports,” or “cable modem with phone service.” Then verify the exact model with your cable provider. A telephone jack or a generic “VoIP compatible” label is not enough: the provider may need to approve the model for your account and provision its voice service.
- Check approval for your account. Ask whether the exact model is approved for your internet service and address.
- Confirm voice support and activation. Verify that the provider supports its phone service on that model and will provision the line.
- Match it to your internet plan. Check that the modem meets the provider’s DOCSIS and plan requirements.
- Check telephone ports and line support. Confirm the device has the connections and line capability your service requires.
- Check for built-in Wi-Fi and routing. If these are not included, you may need a separate router.
Use the provider’s current equipment list as the decisive compatibility check; model support and service offerings can change.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
A provider-specific example
The ARRIS SURFboard T25 is an example of a cable modem with telephone connections. ARRIS’s installation instructions say to connect a phone and contact Xfinity to activate VoIP service, and ARRIS support identifies Xfinity as the T25’s only compatible cable provider. It is therefore an example for eligible Xfinity customers, not a universal cable VoIP modem recommendation. Check current provider approval before buying.
Will the phone work during a power outage?
CableLabs’ E-MTA specification treats operation during a loss of power at the premises and access to emergency services as design considerations. That does not mean every device and provider setup keeps phone service working during an outage. Ask your provider about battery-backup support and confirm how emergency calling behaves with your exact model and service.
