A bump-up CD lets you ask your bank to raise your certificate of deposit’s rate during its term if a qualifying rate becomes available. The change is not automatic, and the rules vary by bank. Current U.S. product pages reviewed on October 7, 2026, confirm examples at Ally Bank, Marcus by Goldman Sachs, and Synchrony Bank; the list is not exhaustive, and rates and availability can change.
How a bump-up CD works
You open a certificate of deposit (CD) for a set term at an initial rate. If the issuer later offers a higher rate that meets the account’s rules, you can request an increase, sometimes called a bump. The bank’s terms determine which rate qualifies, how many requests you can make, and when the new rate takes effect.

A bump normally applies to the remaining term rather than changing interest already earned. Synchrony says its increase takes effect from the day of the increase for the rest of the term; Marcus says its higher rate takes effect after an eligible request is processed.
Bump-up CDs versus step-up CDs
The key difference is who sets the timing. With a bump-up CD, the depositor asks for an increase when eligible. A step-up CD has rate increases scheduled in advance by the bank, so the depositor does not request each scheduled change. Read the account terms: the product label alone does not establish how often a rate can change or what triggers it.

Which banks offer bump-up CDs?
These are examples supported by official U.S. bank product pages reviewed on October 7, 2026, not a complete market list. No APYs are shown because rates are volatile and retrieved rate snapshots conflicted in some cases. Check the issuer’s live offer and account terms before opening.
| Bank and product | Rate-increase rule | Minimum and other terms noted |
|---|---|---|
| Ally Bank Raise Your Rate CD | One possible increase for the two-year term or two for the four-year term, if the rate rises for the same term and opening-balance tier. | No minimum deposit is listed on the product page. Check the live offer for other terms. |
| Marcus by Goldman Sachs Rate Bump CD | Eligible customers can request the highest rate then offered for the same term, subject to the term’s request limit. | $500 minimum. Withdrawing principal before maturity may incur a penalty that reduces earnings. |
| Synchrony Bank Bump-Up CD | One requested increase during the term if Synchrony raises the offered Bump-Up CD rate. | The comparison page lists a 24-month term and no minimum balance. Early withdrawal penalties apply. |
Rising Bank also markets its Rising CD as a bump-up CD, but available rate details were inconsistent in the reviewed material. Confirm the specific offer directly with the bank rather than relying on a quoted rate.

How to compare offers before opening
A bump option is valuable only if a qualifying rate rises while your account is open and the terms let you obtain it. Compare the following for CDs with the same term:
- Opening APY: Compare the bump-up CD’s initial APY with the bank’s ordinary CD for a matched term. The option does not guarantee a higher return.
- Number of requests: Check how many increases are allowed during the term.
- Qualifying rate: Find out whether the comparison is limited to the same term, opening balance tier, or another condition.
- Request process and effective date: Confirm how to request a bump, whether approval is required, and when the higher rate starts.
- Deposit limits and penalties: Check the minimum, any maximum balance, and the early-withdrawal penalty. A penalty can reduce earnings if you need principal before maturity.
- Maturity and renewal: Review what happens at the end of the term and whether the CD renews automatically under the issuer’s rules.
Rates may change before you open or fund an account. Check the bank’s current page and full account disclosures for the exact APY and terms that will apply.
