The bug is the defect; the fix is the corrective change. A patch may be how that change—or another software correction—is delivered to users.
What does “bug fix” mean?
In software, a bug is a defect that makes a program behave incorrectly or contrary to its intended behavior. A bug fix is the change that corrects that behavior. The Semantic Versioning 2.0.0 specification defines a bug fix as “an internal change that fixes incorrect behavior.”
For example, suppose an app crashes when someone submits a login form with an empty password, although it should display a validation message. The crash is the bug. Changing the app so it shows the expected message is the bug fix. This is an illustrative example, not a report of a test.
Bug fix vs. patch: what is the difference?
A bug fix names the correction; a patch usually names a way of delivering a change or an immediate solution. The terms are sometimes used loosely—people may call a small update containing a fix “a bug-fix patch”—but they are not identical.

NIST’s glossary records context-dependent meanings of “patch,” including an immediate solution to an identified problem. Such a patch may be followed by a more complete solution in a later release. NIST’s “patching” entry uses the term more broadly: applying changes to firmware, an operating system, or an application can address security or functionality problems and can also add capabilities.
- Bug: the defect or unintended behavior.
- Bug fix: the corrective software change.
- Patch: a delivered change or immediate solution, depending on context.
- Patching: applying updates that may fix bugs, address security issues, or add capabilities.
How a bug fix is developed and checked
A practical workflow begins with what the user sees and what should happen instead. GitHub Spec Kit documents an assess–fix–test sequence and emphasizes checking the result against the original report. This is one documented approach, not a universal required standard.
- Record the symptom: write down the observed behavior, steps to reproduce it, and the expected behavior.
- Assess the cause: determine whether the report describes a defect and identify what is causing it.
- Make a scoped correction: change the part of the software responsible for the assessed cause.
- Verify the report: repeat the original reproduction steps, run relevant tests, and record the evidence that the expected behavior now occurs.
GitHub Spec Kit’s guide illustrates the value of tying verification back to the original reproduction. A change that compiles or passes unrelated tests is not, by itself, evidence that the reported bug is fixed.
When does a bug fix change the version number?
For projects that follow Semantic Versioning 2.0.0, a backward-compatible bug fix increments the patch component. For instance, under that scheme, 1.4.2 becomes 1.4.3 when the release introduces only backward-compatible bug fixes.

The same specification assigns a minor increment to backward-compatible additions to the public API and a major increment to backward-incompatible public API changes. These are Semantic Versioning rules; a project using a different versioning scheme may label releases differently.
Is a bug the same as a vulnerability?
No. In security engineering, a bug is one kind of defect, while a vulnerability refers to a security condition that can be exploited. NIST’s Bugs Framework distinguishes bugs from related concepts such as faults, errors, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities. A vulnerability may arise through a chain that begins with a bug and leads to exploitable behavior, so the terms should not be treated as synonyms.

How is debugging related to fixing a bug?
Debugging is the activity of determining the nature and location of a program error so it can be corrected; it is not the correction itself. That wording appears in a 1995 FDA-hosted glossary, so it is best read as a general description rather than a claim about a currently maintained standard.
