That sudden movement creates its distinctive tactile change and click, while a spring-driven hammer or flipper activates the keyboard’s sensing mechanism. The spring produces the feel; it is not itself the electrical contact.
How a buckling-spring key switch works
- You press the key. The keycap pushes down on a coil spring beneath it.
- The spring bends and buckles. At a particular point in the press, the spring changes shape abruptly. That change is the pronounced tactile event you feel and contributes to the characteristic click.
- A mechanism registers the press. The spring’s movement drives a hammer or flipper, which actuates the keyboard’s sensing mechanism. The exact sensing method depends on the keyboard family.

What does a buckling-spring switch feel and sound like?
Expect a distinct tactile change during the press and an audible click. The feel and sound come from the spring’s buckling action and its interaction with the mechanism; they are not evidence that every keyboard using the design has an identical sound or feel. Don Bowman, Unicomp’s vice president of development, described the action to PC Gamer as a spring buckling under keycap pressure and pushing on contact pads beneath it. PC Gamer’s September 23, 2025, interview and Model M history provides that explanation.
How Model F and Model M keyboards differ
IBM’s Model F and Model M are the best-known computer keyboard families associated with buckling-spring mechanisms, but their sensing methods differ. In a Model F, the mechanism works with capacitive sensing. In a Model M, the spring-driven action actuates membrane contacts. In both cases, the spring creates the movement and feel; the keyboard’s separate sensing system detects the keypress. IBM also describes a buckling-spring mechanism in the keyboard of its Selectric typewriter, so the term has a typewriter context as well. These examples should not be taken to mean every version uses the same construction or sensing design. PC Gamer and IBM’s Selectric history discuss these examples.

Is a buckling-spring switch compatible with a hot-swap keyboard?
Do not assume it is a drop-in replacement for the switches in an ordinary hot-swap mechanical keyboard. Buckling-spring keyboards use a mechanism designed as part of a compatible keyboard assembly, not simply a standard switch module that fits any hot-swap socket. If you want to use this mechanism, look for a complete buckling-spring keyboard or parts explicitly made for your particular model. For a restoration, verify that any replacement parts or keycaps match the exact keyboard.
