It describes how body-adjacent devices communicate—not simply a wearable device or a particular health function.
What makes a network a BAN?
A BAN centers communication around a body. Its nodes may collect measurements, relay information, or control an action, with the precise role determined by the application. A coordinating node can connect those devices to other systems.

IEEE describes BAN technology as intended for low-power communication on, in, or around the body, with applications spanning medical devices, consumer electronics, and personal entertainment. That means a watch or other wearable is not automatically a BAN: it qualifies in this sense when it is part of a body-centered communications network.
What is a BAN used for?
The network can support different tasks depending on the devices and application. For example, a system may gather data from body-adjacent sensors and pass it to a coordinating device. Other BAN nodes may relay data or provide control. The term itself does not specify which measurements are taken, what decisions are made, or whether the application is medical or nonmedical.

How does IEEE 802.15.6 define the scope?
IEEE 802.15.6 is the relevant IEEE standard family for body area networks. IEEE lists the 2026 edition as active and says it supersedes the 2012 edition. The current listing describes short-range communication in the vicinity of, or inside, a human body or vehicle body; the 2012 listing described the human-body scope. The vehicle wording is part of the standard’s scope, not evidence that ordinary consumer BAN devices support vehicle-area networking.
The two editions state different maximum data rates. These are standard-level capabilities, not a promise of the speed a particular BAN product or deployment will deliver.

What makes BAN design different?
Radio communication near or inside a body has constraints that do not apply in quite the same way to a network operating away from the body. IEEE’s listings identify low power, quality of service (QoS), coexistence, antenna behavior, and specific absorption rate (SAR) as relevant design concerns.
- Power and QoS: Devices may need to use very little power while meeting the workload’s communication and reliability needs.
- Body position and movement: A body’s presence and movement can change portable antenna characteristics and radio behavior.
- Coexistence: Multiple BANs may operate nearby, so systems need to limit interference and coexist with one another.
- SAR and radiation patterns: Antenna design must account for how radio energy is directed into the body.
- Frequency rules: The standard identifies ISM bands and bands approved by national medical or regulatory authorities. The standard does not replace local requirements governing which frequencies may be used.
IEEE’s Task Group 6a describes amendment work intended to improve dependable BAN performance and support vehicle-area networking. That working-group context should not be taken as a feature guarantee for a particular device.
