A Bitcoin block explorer is a website or interface for searching and viewing public records on the Bitcoin blockchain. It can help you inspect a transaction, block, or address, including whether a transaction is unconfirmed or has been included in a block. An explorer displays blockchain data; it is not the Bitcoin network and does not decide who owns an address.
What a Bitcoin block explorer does
Bitcoin.org describes the blockchain as a shared public ledger of confirmed transactions. A block explorer presents selected records from that ledger in a form people can search and read. It is a lookup tool, not a formal part of Bitcoin’s consensus process.
For example, Blockstream Explorer lets you search by transaction ID, address, or block number. Blockstream says its explorer is built on Esplora, open-source software that also provides an API.
What you can look up
Transactions
A transaction page can show whether a transaction is unconfirmed or confirmed, its confirmation count, inputs and outputs, and fee information such as the fee rate. These details help you inspect the transaction’s recorded activity; they do not identify the people behind its addresses.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Blocks
You can search for a block by its number and inspect the records associated with it. When a transaction is included in a block accepted by the network, it receives its first confirmation.
Addresses
An address lookup can show public transaction activity associated with that address. Seeing activity does not establish who controls the address or prove that a particular person made a payment.

How to look up a Bitcoin transaction
-
Copy the transaction ID from the wallet, exchange, or payment record that provided it.
-
Open a block explorer, such as Blockstream Explorer, and enter the transaction ID in its search field.

Review the status, confirmation count, inputs and outputs, and fee details shown on the transaction page. Check that the transaction details correspond to the payment you intended to inspect.
What unconfirmed and confirmed mean
Unconfirmed: seen in a mempool, not yet included in a block
Before inclusion in a block, a transaction may be held in a node’s mempool. Each node maintains its own mempool, and contents can differ with network activity, fees, and node policies. An explorer may display an unconfirmed transaction that it can observe, but that status is not a promise that the transaction will be mined or when it will happen.

Confirmed: included in a block
A transaction receives one confirmation when a miner includes it in a block accepted by the network. Each later block adds another confirmation. More confirmations make the earlier record harder to reverse, but there is no single confirmation threshold that is right for every use case.
Bitcoin.org describes a first confirmation as usually arriving in about 10 to 60 minutes. That is an approximate explanation, not a guarantee: block timing and which transactions miners include vary.

Choosing an explorer
Blockstream Explorer and mempool.space are two examples, not a performance ranking. Blockstream documents transaction, address, and block searches and Bitcoin and Liquid coverage for its service. The Mempool Open Source Project describes mempool.space as a Bitcoin mempool and blockchain explorer focused on the fee market and multi-layer ecosystem, and says it is self-hosted without trusted third parties.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Search options | Check whether the explorer accepts the transaction ID, address, or block number you have. |
| Transaction details | Look for the confirmation state, inputs and outputs, and fee information you need to inspect. |
| Network scope | Check which networks the service covers; Blockstream documents Bitcoin and Liquid coverage for its service. |
| Hosting and software | A hosted website is convenient for a quick lookup. Open-source software can be inspected or run by technically capable users; mempool.space describes its service as self-hosted without trusted third parties. |
What an explorer cannot tell you
-
It cannot make a transaction confirmed simply by displaying it.
-
It does not change Bitcoin’s ledger or decide which transactions the network accepts.
-
An address’s public history does not, by itself, identify its owner.
