A 3D nanoprinting pen is a laboratory probe that uses a tiny electrolyte-bearing hydrogel tip and an electrochemical reaction to deposit material at nanoscale dimensions. It is not a handheld craft pen that extrudes plastic filament. In the original reported demonstration, researchers deposited platinum structures on a gold electrode, with some structures smaller than 100 nm.
What is a 3D nanoprinting pen?
The term describes a research-scale nanofabrication probe. Its “pen” is a microscopic hydrogel tip positioned with precision equipment, not a consumer device for drawing plastic objects. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2014 summary describes work by Seongpil Hwang of Korea University and colleagues; the associated paper by Hosuk Kang, Seongpil Hwang and Juhyoun Kwak appeared in Nanoscale in 2015. The reported result was platinum deposited on a gold electrode, with some structures smaller than 100 nm, according to the RSC’s 2014 account. That figure describes the reported structures, not a general resolution guarantee for every device or material.
How does the hydrogel pen work?
- Electrolyte is held at the tip. The probe has a microscopic pyramid-shaped hydrogel tip, with electrolyte concentrated at its sharp apex.
- The tip is brought into controlled contact. A nanopositioning system places the tip against an ultramicroelectrode. The contact localizes the region where reactants can move and react.
- An electrochemical reaction deposits material. The reaction drives electrodeposition at the contacted area, allowing a structure to be formed on the electrode surface.
This is a coordinated laboratory process involving a specialized probe, electrochemical control and precision positioning. It is not simply a smaller version of a desktop filament printer. A related Korean patent describes a sharp pyramid containing hydrogel, water and electrolyte, and mentions possible use in mapping chemical reactivity with an electrochemical scanning microscope. The English patent page is machine translated, and its claims do not establish commercial availability or independently verified performance. KR20170057967A patent record.

How it differs from other nanoprinting methods
“Nanoprinting” covers different approaches that deliver or form material in different ways. Their measurements belong to their respective research setups and should not be attributed to the hydrogel pen.
| Approach | Material and mechanism | Reported performance | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydrogel electrochemical pen | Metal deposition localized by an electrolyte-bearing hydrogel tip and electrode contact | Some platinum structures under 100 nm, as reported in the RSC’s 2014 summary | Research probe; the cited demonstration deposited platinum on gold |
| AFM-controlled polymer nanoprinting | Microfluidic material delivery combined with rapid surface-initiated polymerization | Nature Communications reported about 2 nm precision for individual z-layers and minimum line widths as small as 450 nm in 2022 | Different system; the authors describe it as slower than optical-based methods, while noting it can handle polymers that do not require photoactive groups. Nature Communications study |
| Metalens-array two-photon lithography | Parallel optical printing using an array of laser focal points | UNC Charlotte reported more than 120,000 focal points, speeds above 120 million voxels per second and features down to 113 nm in a February 16, 2026 release | A separate optical platform, not a hydrogel pen; figures are those reported by UNC Charlotte. UNC Charlotte release |
| Nanotube fountain pen | A metal-filled carbon nanotube injector and nanotube network used as a metal mass reservoir | Not stated in the cited source | A distinct 2015 approach for writing metallic nanostructures, not the hydrogel/electrodeposition pen. Carbon paper |
These methods illustrate different engineering trade-offs: electrochemical deposition localizes a metal-forming reaction; the AFM polymer system emphasizes controlled material delivery and layer-by-layer z precision; and the metalens system emphasizes parallel optical throughput. The available figures do not make them directly interchangeable: they concern different materials, mechanisms and experiments, and do not establish a single best method for every structure. The cited sources do not provide comparable measurements for every axis, such as overhang capability, throughput or equipment requirements.

Is the 3D nanoprinting pen a product you can buy?
The cited sources describe a research method, patent and academic work; they do not establish that the hydrogel pen is currently sold as an off-the-shelf consumer product, nor do they provide a verified price or compatible replacement tip. Generic handheld 3D printing pens and filament are not substitutes for this setup. The method depends on specialized electrochemical and positioning equipment, rather than a consumer-style pen alone.
