5E Advanced Materials is a development-stage company building a boron business around its Fort Cady project in California. It extracts boron-bearing mineral from colemanite using in-situ leaching, then processes the resulting solution into boric acid. The company operates a small-scale facility; its much larger commercial plant remains a proposed project, not established commercial production.
What is 5E Advanced Materials?
5E Advanced Materials is a development-stage company that holds the Fort Cady project in southern California through its wholly owned subsidiary, 5E Boron Americas. Its goal is to produce boric acid and related calcium-based products from a deposit containing colemanite, a hydrated calcium borate mineral. The company describes potential end markets including glass, ceramics, agriculture and specialty chemicals. 5E’s Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026 calls the company development-stage and says its small-scale facility is operating.

How does 5E make boron products?
At Fort Cady, the project’s planned extraction method is in-situ leaching, or ISL. Rather than mining and hauling all the ore to a conventional processing plant, the method circulates a leaching solution through the underground mineral deposit and brings the boron-bearing solution to the surface for processing.
From colemanite to leach solution
The Fort Cady colemanite deposit is the source of the boron. The project’s 2025 pre-feasibility technical report describes using a hydrochloric-acid solution to leach minerals in situ. The resulting boron-bearing liquid is called pregnant leach solution.

From leach solution to products
At the surface facility, the pregnant leach solution is processed to produce boric acid. The technical report also describes calcium chloride and gypsum as co-products. In this context, “boron products” means refined borates and boron derivatives made from ore—not elemental boron metal. The process and proposed plant design are detailed in 5E’s August 2025 Fort Cady SK-1300 pre-feasibility technical report.
What is operating, and what is still planned?

So, 5E is producing at small scale, but the available company and technical-report information does not establish production at the proposed Phase 1 commercial rate.

What do the Fort Cady study figures say?
The August 2025 pre-feasibility study sets out a proposed Phase 1 design and an economic model. Its headline figures are forecasts based on the report’s assumptions, scope and qualifications; they are not realized results or guarantees.

What has 5E said about customers?
On its Development Progress page, 5E reports that 14 customers have qualified its product and that it completed a 20-ton commercial tank trial. These are company-reported customer milestones; they do not by themselves establish recurring sales or commercial-scale production. The company’s project page quotes CEO Paul Weibel saying that the company had “qualified product with over 14 large global end users” as it targeted large-scale commercial production. What to keep in mind about 5E’s plans
- The product is industrial: The project concerns boric acid and calcium-based co-products for industrial markets, not a consumer boric-acid item.
- Study economics are conditional: The proposed capacity, mine life, NPV and IRR are estimates in a pre-feasibility study that relies on stated assumptions and qualifications.
- Commercial development has dependencies: 5E says its targeted fiscal 2026 investment decision depends on financing, final engineering and board approval.
