What Is 24V Passive PoE? Definition, Compatibility and Safety

24V passive PoE sends a fixed 24-volt supply and Ethernet data over one cable, without negotiating with the connected device. Check voltage, polarity, pinout and power requirements before connecting.

24V passive PoE carries Ethernet data and a fixed 24-volt electrical supply over the same cable. Unlike IEEE 802.3 active PoE, the power source does not first negotiate with the connected device. That makes compatibility a matter of checking the exact device and power-source specifications—not just matching the voltage label.

What “24V passive PoE” means

PoE means power over Ethernet: electrical power and network data travel through one Ethernet cable. “24V” identifies the supply voltage. “Passive” means the source provides its fixed output without first detecting or negotiating with the device at the other end. Ubiquiti describes passive PoE this way and lists 24V among its fixed-voltage outputs.

Passive PoE does not define one universal pinout, polarity, or compatibility rule. A 24V label by itself therefore does not tell you whether a particular access point, radio, camera, or other device can safely use that source.

How it differs from IEEE 802.3 active PoE

Question 24V passive PoE IEEE 802.3 active PoE
How power is applied A fixed output is present without negotiation. The source detects or negotiates with the powered device before supplying power.
Standard status The cited vendor material treats 24V passive PoE as a non-standard fixed-voltage mode. 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt are standards-based PoE modes.
What to verify Supported input voltage, polarity, powered pairs or pinout, and power requirement. That the source and device support the relevant IEEE mode and power level.
Main compatibility concern A source may apply power to a device that does not support it, or use mismatched wiring polarity or pins. The device must support the standard and the source must provide an adequate power level.

TP-Link describes passive PoE as always on and not adhering to an IEEE standard. The Ethernet Alliance likewise distinguishes IEEE-compliant detection from passive systems in which power is always present. A passive injector should not be treated as an 802.3af, 802.3at or 802.3bt injector.

What to check before connecting a device

  1. Confirm the device accepts 24V passive PoE. Check the current product label, datasheet or quick-start guide. Do not infer compatibility just because the device has an Ethernet port or is described as PoE-capable.
  2. Match polarity and powered pins. Confirm which pairs or pins carry power and their positive/negative orientation in both the device and the source documentation.
  3. Check available power and data capability. Confirm that the source can supply the device’s required power and supports the Ethernet data rate you need.
  4. Respect standards-only input requirements. If the device specifies IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at or 802.3bt input, do not assume a 24V passive source is suitable.
  5. Resolve uncertainty before plugging in. If either manual is unclear, use the manufacturer’s recommended power supply or obtain confirmation for the exact models.

The reason for these checks is practical: TP-Link warns that a passive supply at a voltage beyond the device’s supported input can burn or permanently damage it. ENTTEC also advises confirming the required voltage before connection.

A 24V passive injector example

Tycon lists the TP-POE-24G as a 24V, 24W gigabit passive PoE injector. Its listing specifies positive voltage on pins 4/5 and negative voltage on pins 7/8, and notes that a reversed-voltage model is available. This is an example of why the voltage rating alone is insufficient: the device must also accept the injector’s pin assignment and polarity. The listing does not establish that this injector is suitable for any particular device.

How much power do active PoE standards provide?

For context, Ubiquiti’s Help Center lists these maximum output figures for its active standards. They are not specifications for the passive injector described above.

Active PoE standard PSE maximum output listed by Ubiquiti
802.3af 15.4 W
802.3at 30 W
802.3bt Type 3 60 W
802.3bt Type 4 100 W

These are vendor documentation figures from an undated Ubiquiti Help Center article accessed in 2026. They describe active-standard PSE output, not the amount a particular powered device receives.
