A green bubble means it was sent with RCS, SMS, or MMS. Green alone does not tell you which of those three services carried the message.
What blue and green bubbles mean
Apple’s iMessage guide says iMessage messages appear in blue bubbles. iMessage works between Apple devices with iMessage enabled and can send over Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Green bubbles mark messages sent through RCS, SMS, or MMS instead of iMessage. Apple summarizes the distinction this way: “If you see a green message bubble instead of a blue one, then that message was sent using RCS or MMS/SMS instead of iMessage.” (Apple Support.) The color does not identify which green-bubble protocol was used.

RCS is a richer carrier message service, but it is still green
RCS is distinct from SMS and MMS. Apple lists support for high-resolution photos and videos, links, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators. On iPhone, RCS messages still appear in green bubbles, so color alone cannot distinguish RCS from SMS or MMS.
RCS availability depends on carrier and location: Apple says it is not supported by every carrier or in every country or region. If RCS does not appear as an option, or you need to know whether it is available on your line, check with your carrier. (Apple’s iOS 26 Messages setup guide.)

Bubble color does not tell you whether a conversation is encrypted
Apple says iMessage conversations are end-to-end encrypted, while SMS and MMS are not. Its comparison page describes end-to-end encrypted RCS as a beta beginning with iOS 26.5 for supported providers, with availability rolling out over time. Encryption also depends on every participant’s provider supporting it. Therefore, a green bubble does not establish that a message is encrypted; green can represent RCS, SMS, or MMS, and RCS encryption is not universal. (Apple’s protocol comparison.)
What to check when iPhone messages unexpectedly turn green
A green message may be normal if the recipient or message route is not using iMessage. If you expected iMessage, Apple recommends checking these settings and conditions:

- Confirm iMessage is on. Go to Settings > Apps > Messages and check that iMessage is enabled.
- Check the sending address. In Messages settings, open Send & Receive and select the phone number or email address you intend to use.
- Check device setup. After setting up a new device, update iOS or iPadOS and confirm that the intended cellular line is enabled, especially if you use multiple SIMs.
- Refresh iMessage if needed. Apple recommends turning iMessage off and back on as a troubleshooting step.
These checks can help with setup problems, but they cannot make an iMessage conversation with a recipient who is not using iMessage. A bubble’s color is the result of the service used for that message, not a setting you can force independently. See Apple’s green-message troubleshooting guidance.
