Apple lists interface, search, app, Photos, Messages, and family-safety improvements alongside its AI features. Whether they justify updating depends on your iPad model and how you use it; Apple’s stated performance improvements are not a guarantee that a particular older iPad will feel faster.
What changes in iPadOS 27 without Apple Intelligence?
Apple’s September 29, 2026 release notes describe several changes outside the Apple Intelligence feature group. For an infrequently used iPad, the most noticeable may be a more readable interface or an app that fits the screen better—not the AI features Apple highlights separately.

Readability and everyday system use
- Liquid Glass controls: Apple says readability is improved and adds a slider to adjust the appearance from ultra-clear to fully tinted.
- Search: Spotlight, Photos, and Mail are listed as offering more relevant and comprehensive search.
- Status bar: App names can appear in the status bar.
- iPhone apps on iPad: You can resize iPhone apps running on iPad, which may make them more comfortable to use on the larger display.
Messages and Photos
Apple lists better Messages syncing across devices and enhancements to iCloud Shared Albums in Photos. The release notes do not quantify how much these changes improve syncing or albums in everyday use.
Performance claims, with a caveat
Apple reports faster performance in system experiences such as app launches, AirDrop transfers, and moving files between iPad and an external drive. These are Apple’s stated improvements, not independent measurements for each iPad model. Apple publishes no model-specific benchmark here, so treat them as a general claim rather than a promise that an older supported iPad will feel faster. Apple also notes that software updates can affect performance and/or battery life; that warning does not establish that iPadOS 27 will slow a particular iPad or reduce its battery life. What iPadOS 27 changes for a family iPad
For a device shared with a child, family controls may matter more than the general interface refinements. Apple lists these changes:
- During new child-account setup, choose which apps the child can access.
- Use Ask to Browse approval for new websites.
- Expanded Communication Safety covers shared images and videos.
- Set app Time Allowances and schedules for app access.
- Manage controls through redesigned Screen Time settings.
These features are relevant when the iPad is set up for a child or family use; they are not a reason on their own for every occasional user to change their routine.

Apple Intelligence is a separate compatibility check
An iPad can be eligible for iPadOS 27 without being eligible for Apple Intelligence. Apple’s current support guide says Apple Intelligence on iPadOS 27 requires an iPad mini (A17 Pro) or an iPad with M1 or later. The AI feature group includes capabilities such as Siri’s personal context and app actions, writing tools, and image features; these are not benefits to assume on every iPad that can install the operating system.

Which iPads can install iPadOS 27?
Apple’s compatibility list includes a broad range of models, including iPad (9th generation), iPad mini (6th generation), iPad (10th generation), iPad (A16), iPad Air (4th and 5th generation), listed M-series iPad Air models, iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation) and later listed generations, and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation) and later listed generations, along with newer listed models. Apple cautions that features and apps may vary by model, region, language, and carrier. Consult the full iPadOS 27 compatibility list for the exact model names; compatibility with the operating system does not establish Apple Intelligence eligibility.
How to check your model and update
- On the iPad, open Settings > General > About and identify the model.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update. Apple says this screen offers the latest iPadOS software compatible with that model.
- Review the version and available update shown on the iPad before installing. As of Apple’s September 29, 2026 notes, the current listed release is iPadOS 27.0.1, described as a bug-fix update; the notes retrieved for that release do not enumerate individual fixes.

Is iPadOS 27 worth installing on an old iPad?
If your exact model is supported, the answer depends on whether the non-AI changes solve a problem for you. A more readable interface, resized iPhone apps, better search, or child-access controls may be useful even when Apple Intelligence is unavailable. If none matters to how you use the iPad, the update may feel modest; Apple’s performance claim alone is not enough to predict a speed gain on your model. Check Software Update for availability, and do not replace hardware solely to reach AI features you do not need.
