IoT smart parking connects vehicle or space detection with communications and software to report parking availability and support services such as guidance, reservations, access control and payment. It is a system of components and services—not one particular sensor—and what it offers depends on how a site is designed and operated.
How does an IoT smart parking system work?
A typical system moves information through four stages. The exact equipment and network vary by site; the ITU-T smart-parking standard defines requirements and a functional architecture, not one mandatory detector or communications protocol.

- Detect occupancy. Sensors or other vehicle-detection technologies determine whether a space or area is occupied. Approaches can differ, and no single detector is universal.
- Transmit observations. Field devices or aggregators send parking-status data to a platform over communications selected for the installation.
- Process and manage data. Software turns observations into availability information and operational data for the parking operator.
- Deliver services. The system can present availability to drivers or support other parking functions, depending on what the operator has implemented.
ITU-T Recommendation Y.4456, approved on March 1, 2018 and listed as in force, sets out requirements and a functional architecture for smart parking lots in smart cities. Its named services include parking guidance, space reservation, vehicle reverse search, automatic access control and self-service payment. These are possible functions, not features guaranteed in every installation. ITU-T Y.4456
What sensors are used in smart parking?
There is no single required sensor. A system may detect occupancy space by space or use another vehicle-detection approach suited to the parking environment. A 2021 review surveys different sensing, vehicle-detection and communications approaches rather than establishing one universal design. - [New Wider Angle Upgrade] This updated product from Fosmon is perfect for a one or two car garage. The angle of the two lasers is widened up to 75 degrees, which can safely and efficiently assist two cars.
- [Park Correctly and Easily Every Time] Do you have trouble about parking in a garage? Are you often too close to the side, too far forward, or too far back? Fosmon's dual laser parking assistant will allow you to park in the correct spot every time. With its simple installation and setup, the garage parking aid will be ready to use in minutes. No more busted bumpers and doors.
- [Motion Activated Laser] The motion activated lasers have a detection range of 33 feet/10 meters, and will shut off after 30 seconds without motion.
- [Provides Individual Laser Control] The garage parking aid allows for individual laser control for use with one parking stall or two. Simply toggle the button located on the side of the unit to switch between one or two lasers. The lasers have a 360-degree adjustment, ensuring that no matter the vehicle or parking spot size, the laser will be able to hit the mark each and every time.
- [Battery Backup and Motion Activated] Even if the power goes out, the dual laser garage parking aid can use a 9v powered battery backup. NOTE: Battery not included.
For a real installation, detection is only one part of the decision. Operators also need to consider the site’s layout, available power and communications, installation and maintenance needs, and how status data will reach the platform. Those constraints affect which approach is practical; the literature does not support treating any one technology as best for every site.
What can smart parking do for drivers and operators?
At a basic level, connected availability information can support parking guidance. Depending on the system’s scope, it may also allow a driver to reserve a space, locate a parked vehicle through reverse search, pass through automatic access control or pay through a self-service channel. Whether any of these services is available depends on the installation and its operator.

- 【Precision Detection】Ultrasonic garage parking sensors precisely detect vehicle distance and display real-time visual alerts—green for safe, yellow for approaching, and red for STOP—helping you park perfectly every time with no guesswork
- 【Adjustable Stop Distance】Simply park your car in the ideal spot (6 inches to 6 feet), press the "Set Distance" button, and the sensor memorizes your preferred parking position . Making it ideal for single-car or double-car garages, tight parking spaces, and SUVs, pickups, or sedans
- 【LED Stop Sign】High-brightness red, yellow, and green LED indicators are clearly visible day or night. No numbers to read—any driver can instantly understand the signals, even in low-light conditions
- 【No-Drill Mount】The wall-mounted design installs quickly on walls, workbenches, shelves, or any flat surface in front of your vehicle using 𝐚𝐝𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 or screws. No ceiling hooks, floor mats, or laser alignment required—keeping your garage tidy, safe, and clutter-free
- 【Dual Power】Supports power via power(included)cord or optional batteries (not included) for flexible installation. No hardwiring required—ideal for garages without nearby outlets or for portable use
These are functional capabilities, not proof of a particular outcome. The sources establish the kinds of services a system can support, but do not establish a universal reduction in parking-search time, congestion, emissions or operating costs. Results would need to be assessed for the specific deployment.

- Distance Detection: Our car parking radar covers a range of 0.3 m to 2.5 m and features a highly efficient detector function. When the car reverses, the radar automatically activates to detect the distance between the car and the obstacle and displays it on the screen to assist the driver in reversing
- Backup Alarm: When approaching an obstruction, the parking sensor will emit a beeping alarm sound to alert the driver, ensuring they can safely maneuver around the obstacle. This advanced safety feature effectively prevents collisions, enhancing the overall safety of the vehicle in motion
- Durable Material: Manufactured from high-quality ABS material, our position sensors have a robust structure that can withstand long-term use without deformation or breakage. The ceramic crystal oscillator is highly sensitive and operates stably at temperatures ranging from -30°C to 70°C
- Easy to Install: First, drill holes in the car bumper. Second, install the probes on the mounting holes. Next, connect the probe wires and the power supply of the LED display to the main control box. Finally, connect the radar power red wire to the reverse light and the black wire to the ground wire
- Package Includes: This car parking sensor kit includes a main control box, an LED digital display measuring 3.9" long by 0.8" high, four sensors with wires, a driller, and a power cord. The complete installation kit minimizes the need to purchase additional accessories, saving you time and effort
NIST has also described in-situ deployment and testing as important to unifying smart-city deployment practices. In practice, a proposed system should be checked in the environment where it will operate, including how it exchanges data and how it can be maintained. Standards work provides useful context for compatibility across connected systems, but it does not make a particular standard mandatory for every parking lot. How smart parking fits into a smart city
Smart parking is one possible city service using IoT and information and communications technology. ITU-T Y.4223 describes smart cities and communities in terms of goals that include urban sustainability and quality of life, and lists smart parking among possible services. That wider context does not show that a particular parking installation achieves those goals; its performance depends on the system and its operation. Y.4223 was approved on September 22, 2023 and is listed as in force. ITU-T Y.4223

What to check when evaluating a system
- Detection: What is being sensed, and is occupancy measured at each space, at entrances and exits, or across an area?
- Site fit: What do installation, power, communications and ongoing maintenance require at this location?
- Integration: Can the system exchange data with the operator’s other systems or relevant city platforms?
- Service scope: Does it report availability only, or also provide guidance, reservations, reverse search, access control or payment?
- Local validation: Has the system been tested under the conditions in which it will actually be used?
